Fixed Assets Accountant

The Fixed Asset Accountant is responsible for managing the full lifecycle of the company’s fixed assets—particularly those critical to fuel operations such as storage facilities, transport fleet, retail equipment, and terminal infrastructure. This role ensures accurate capitalisation, depreciation, impairment assessment, and disposal accounting in accordance with relevant accounting standards and internal policies. It also supports operational teams by providing clear asset reporting, maintaining strong internal controls, and safeguarding the integrity of asset-related financial data critical in the management of capital.

Responsibilities Include:

  • Asset Lifecycle Management — Oversee acquisition, capitalisation, depreciation, impairment, and disposal of fixed assets.
  • Fixed Asset Register — Maintain an accurate, audit‑ready register for all operational and infrastructure assets.
  • Capital Expenditure Review — Ensure Capex aligns with budget, project plans, accounting standards and company policy.
  • Depreciation Accounting — Calculate and post depreciation for diverse asset classes.
  • Audit Support — Prepare schedules, documentation, and reconciliations for internal and external audits.
  • Regulatory Compliance — Ensure asset accounting complies with industry‑specific safety, environmental, and financial regulations.
  • Cross‑Functional Collaboration — Partner with operations, engineering, procurement, and finance teams to validate asset data and support strategic decisions.
  • Equipment management: Review equipment rental and sales agreements and ensure approved assets are appropriately capitalised and charged to customers.
  • Repairs and Maintenance: Review property and fleet repairs and maintenance costs to determine whether costs should be capitalised or expensed and are within the expenditure budget and policy.
  • Clearing account management: Monitor the fixed assets clearing account and follow up on items pending capitalisation.
  • Tax Compliance: Track and review assets and expenditure in line with tax legislation and FBT specific to motor vehicle expenditure.
  • Hire Purchase and Lease agreements: Maintain and reconcile the Hire Purchase schedule including additions and monthly journals with relevant accounting standards.
  • Fleet expenditure: Process EOM journals for motor vehicle registrations, insurance, and related costs.
  • Bachelor degree in Accounting, Finance or related field
  • CPA/CA qualified or working toward accreditation
  • Minimum 1-2 years experienced in fixed asset or financial accounting
  • Experience in fuel, energy, utilities or capital intensive industries (preferred)
  • Strong understanding of useful lives, depreciation rules (tax and accounting) and impairment
  • Ability to apply accounting standards to Capex V Opex decisions
  • Ability to reconcile sub-ledgers, general ledger, and project accounts
  • Experience preparing audit schedules and responding to queries
  • High attention to detail with strong data validation skills
  • Clear communication with operations, procurement and finance
  • Ability to investigate discrepancies and propose corrective actions
  • Strong commitment to internal controls and accurate financial reporting.
  • Strong communication skills with experience operations and project managers
  • Ability to maintain accurate records with high attention to detail.
  • Understanding of vehicle serving schedules, maintenance coordination and truck movement processes
  • Willingness to step in across multiple operational areas, assist and support finance, asset and fleet managers as needed.
