A Fusion Technician working for Core & Main has a mix of hands-on technical, quality control, and customer-facing responsibilities. Below is a breakdown of typical job expectations in this role.
A Fusion Technician for Core & Main is not just a “welder”—they’re:

Major Tasks, Responsibilities and Key Accountabilities
- Determines appropriate method and equipment necessary to install pipe
- Perform Heat Fusion of HDPE Pipe
- Electro fuses and structure welds.
These are the core skills—the expectation is consistent, high-quality, leak-free joints.
- Communicates with customers to assess needs.
- Identifies installation and repair needs.
- Determines if final product meets quality control standards.
- Transports equipment to job site. Operates field equipment.
- Quality Control and Documentation. Follow industry standards.
- Responsible for 24 hour on-call repair emergencies.
- The scope of the Fusion Technician job is not solely performing fusion activities in the field. Inspects and maintains fusion equipment.
- Participate as an integral part of the assigned branch when not engaged in fusion or equipment activities. Stay in touch with operations manager and look for opportunities to help out in the pulling of orders, stocking, and yard organization.
Nature and Scope
- Refers complex, unusual problems to supervisor.
- Follow all Core & Main safety procedures and complete all required safety training
- Exercises some judgment in accordance with well-defined policies, procedures, and techniques. Work typically involves regular review of output by a senior coworker or supervisor.
Work Environment
- Combination of: Shop/Yard work, Outdoor Field Work, and Fabrication work
- May include early starts, travel to job sites, and overtime
- Typically requires overnight travel 50% of the time.
- Requires intermittent periods during which continuous physical exertion is required, such as walking, standing, stooping, climbing, lifting, and maneuvering material or equipment, some of which may be heavy (50+ pounds) or awkward.
Minimum Qualifications
- Must be a minimum of 21 years of age or older
- Must have a valid Driver's License
- Must pass pre-employment assessment(s) if applicable
- Knowledge of construction job sites
Preferred Qualifications
Any of the following:
- McElroy Fusion Training Qualification
- Electrofusion Qualification
- OSHA 10
- MSHA Part 46 safety training
- Forklift training
Education and Experience
- HS Diploma or GED, strongly preferred.
- Specialized skills training/certification preferred, training is available
