FWS possible: Sustainable Labs Student Employee (Student Wage)
UVA’s Sustainable Labs Program is recruiting an exceptional undergraduate student employee to assist with the advancement of special projects focused on reducing the environmental footprint of research labs across Grounds.
Research labs are enormously energy- and resource-intensive spaces; engaging them is a critical strategy for implementing high-impact sustainability solutions.
The Sustainable Labs Student Employee (SLSE) will work in the Office for Sustainability, reporting to the Sustainable Labs Program Manager, and collaborating with a variety of stakeholders both within the office and across Grounds, including UVA researchers.
This position will begin in Fall 2026 and requires 5–10 hours per week, paid at $15 per hour. Work will be hybrid, with attendance at some in-person events required. The student employee must also be available to attend at least one in-person weekly meeting during regular business hours in Skipwith Hall. Applications are due by August 2 at 11:59pm EDT

Position Responsibilities:
The SLSE will support outreach and events for Green Labs, actively engaging researchers to help reduce laboratories’ energy use, water consumption, and waste generation. The SLSE can expect to participate in key initiatives, including:
- Green Labs Certification.
- International Freezer Challenge.
- Shut the Sash Competition.
- Green Labs Resource Fairs.
- Other outreach events (e.g., Green Labs Resource Fairs, JunkLabz Drop Off Events.)
The ideal candidate will be passionate about supporting laboratories’ sustainability journeys and collaborating with team members and other UVA stakeholders to drive meaningful progress.
Additional Opportunities:
The SLSE will also have the opportunity to contribute to data management projects and research special topics related to laboratory sustainability. The ideal candidate will be driven and curious, eager to learn how to leverage various platforms, tools, and processes to support institutional goals. This position requires a creative mindset and enthusiasm for sustainability work.

Experience and Education
