JOB DESCRIPTION SUMMARY

The Garden Specialist plays a key role in maintaining the functionality and appearance of both indoor and outdoor learning environments. This position supports the horticulture program by assisting with garden care, lab material setup, and the daily care of animals used in instructional settings. The role includes routine maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure safe, organized, and efficient workspaces for students and staff.

BRIEF SUMMARY OF POSITION:


The Garden Specialist plays a key role in maintaining the functionality and appearance of both indoor and outdoor learning environments. This position supports the horticulture program by assisting with garden care, lab material setup, and the daily care of animals used in instructional settings. The role includes routine maintenance and cleaning tasks to ensure safe, organized, and efficient workspaces for students and staff.

ESSENTIAL POSITION FUNCTIONS:


1. Work with HLSM faculty and staff to maintain indoor and outdoor spaces in all weather conditions

2. Basic plant maintenance to include watering, weeding, planting, mulching and pruning.

3. Basic organizational skills to assist in the storage and maintenance of equipment.

4. Basic animal care including watering, feeding, cleaning of the farmyard spaces and egg collection.

5. Practice open communication with HLSM Faculty and Staff

6. Recommend to HLSM faculty and staff needed supplies.

7. Consistently and dependably attend work as scheduled or assigned.

8. Practice proper safety procedures associated with equipment.

9. Tasks to be determined.



KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:


1. Basic skills in horticulture and/or animal husbandry.

2. Ability to lift 25+ pounds.

3. Ability to bend and kneel regularly.

4. Ability to work independently, with minimal supervision, and in a team environment.

5. Ability to be flexible, as needed.

6. Ability to maintain professionalism, patience, and understanding in stressful situations.

7. Ability to communicate one-on-one and with groups.

8. Ability to work well with others.

9. Ability to effectively work and interact with various cultures and ethnicities.



MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS FOR EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:


1. High School diploma plus one-year related experience/education.

2. Minimal horticulture/plant/animal husbandry knowledge required.

3. Equivalent combination of education and / or experience considered.

4. Must pass a background check.

5. Driver’s License preferred.
