About Youth Opportunity & Memphis Youth Academy

Youth Opportunity is a nationally recognized leader in residential and behavioral health treatment for at-risk youth. Memphis Youth Academy in Memphis, Tennessee, is a higher-capacity Youth Academy (approximately 68 beds) serving boys ages 13–18 in a trauma-informed residential setting. The program integrates clinical mental health and behavioral treatment with daily academic instruction, art, music, recreation, and social skills development.

Youth typically spend 6 to 9 months in the program, participating in individual, family, and group therapy, restorative justice, life skills training, victim-impact awareness, and pre-vocational preparation. Small group living units foster stability, engagement, and preparation for reintegration into school and community environments.


About the Role

We are seeking a passionate General Education Teacher to provide individualized instruction and support for students in grades 6-12 in English, Language Arts, Mathematics, Science, and Social Studies. This role is essential to improving outcomes for students with complex needs through collaboration, structured programming, and a trauma-informed approach.

Key Responsibilities

  • Instruct students to build academic, interpersonal, and daily living skills


  • Develop and deliver lesson plans aligned with individualized needs and IEPs


  • Administer developmental and academic assessments


  • Adapt classroom materials and lessons for diverse learners


  • Monitor and assess student progress, providing feedback to teams and caregivers


  • Counsel students on academic and behavioral challenges


  • Collaborate with teachers, staff, foster parents, and outside resources


  • Document grades, attendance, behavior logs, and other required reports


  • Support the prevention of client abuse through vigilance and policy adherence


  • Report incidents promptly to ensure safety and compliance


Qualifications

Required:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Education


  • Valid driver’s license and ability to pass background checks


  • Valid teaching license

Preferred:

  • Master’s degree or Special Education certification


  • 3+ years teaching experience with students with behavioral, developmental, or intellectual disabilities


  • First Aid, CPR, and crisis prevention training (or willingness to obtain)


Physical Demands

  • Must be in good physical health and emotionally stable


  • Able to actively engage with youth, participate in physical interventions, and transport youth or staff as needed


  • Must be free of communicable diseases as defined by the state


  • Must pass evaluation of physical techniques and certification exams
