A Brief Overview
This position of a clinically, laboratory or research-based Provisional Genetic Counselor is an interim role for graduates of a Master's Program in Human Genetics or Genetic Counseling who are awaiting licensure in order to be able to transition into a Graduate or Genetic Counselor title.
Working under the supervision of a licensed Genetic Counselor/licensed physician, the Provisional Graduate Genetic Counselor will obtain and review the necessary medical, laboratory, and developmental records; prepare relevant literature review; obtain a minimum three-generation family history; and provide prepared patient summaries/progress notes to the appropriate Genetic Counselor/physician to review for the appropriate clinical or research encounter.
What you will do
- Provisional Genetic Counselor job responsibilities may include the following and vary based on the specific job role:
- Clinical: under the direction of a licensed Genetic Counselor/licensed physician in the Division, provisional genetic counselor roles may include:
- Assist genetic counselors and other clinical team members with patient chart/electronic health record (EHR) preparation for clinic, medical record gathering including results of laboratory studies
- Assist in writing letters of medical necessity
- Coordinate test requisition forms for testing
- For new patient appointments, accurately and thoroughly complete relevant intake information
- Assist in scheduling ancillary tests and complete all necessary paperwork and/or EHR charting entries with sign off from the relevant licensed physician
- Phone and care coordination responsibilities:
- - record accurately and thoroughly in patient’s EHR all telephone messages, detailing the caller’s name, company or patient name, phone number, and reason for call
- - provide appropriate documentation of care coordination activities/encounters in EHR as per each program’s requirements
- Laboratory-based provisional genetic counselor roles, performed under supervision of a licensed genetic counselor / laboratory director, may include:
- Accurately performing clinical correlation, variant classification, and/or report writing for genomic tests of high complexity
- Providing professional and calm customer service to both internal and external clinicians/clients.
- Supporting refinement or update of existing laboratory workflows/protocols in order to improve
sensitivity, efficiency and quality of testing - Research-based provisional genetic counselor roles, performed under supervision of a licensed genetic counselor / principal investigator, may include:
- Involvement with research activity related to their specialized patient population based on specific job description
- Following IRB protocols and guidelines as per specific approved protocol
- Working directly with the Principal Investigator and/or other team leaders for the specific research protocol
Education Qualifications
- Master's Degree Genetic Counseling or Human Genetics Required
Experience Qualifications
Licensed Genetic Counselor II
- At least three (3) years experience as an independent genetic counselor Required
Licensed Genetic Counselor III
- At least five (5) years as an independent genetic counselor Required
Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of Microsoft Office suite

Licenses and Certifications
Provisional Graduate Genetic Counselor:
- Genetic Counselor Provisional License - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 3 months - Required
- Certified Genetics Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) - within 15 months - Required
Graduate Genetic Counselor
- Genetic Counselor Provisional License - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required and
- Certified Genetics Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) - within 15 months - Required
Licensed Genetic Counselor I / II / III
- Certified Genetics Counselor - American Board of Genetic Counseling (ABGC) - upon hire - Required and
- Licensed Genetics Counselor - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 3 months - Required or
- Licensed Osteopathic Genetic Counselor - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - within 3 months - Required
- Licensed Genetics Counselor - New Jersey State Licensing Board - - Preferred

SALARY RANGE:
$76,100.00 - $97,000.00 AnnuallySalary ranges are shown for full-time jobs. If you're working part-time, your pay will be adjusted accordingly.
