Position Description

The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a Geotechnical Specialist – Geotechnical Data & Rock Mass Modelling. This role reports to the Geotechnical Lead – AME and works with Geotechnical Managers, Senior Geotechnical Engineer – Design, and site based Geotechnical and Geological Teams.

This role is responsible for the stewardship of all geotechnical data and rock mass models across the Barrick AME mine sites. It provides technical guidance to site teams on geotechnical data collection practices, consolidates all validated data into a secure central repository, and produces the factual reports required for engineering decision-making. The role also develops robust, annually updated rock mass models to support mine design and operational planning.

You will be expected to align to the Barrick DNA and to operate within our mining assets and with our teams. You will contribute in a safe and cost-effective manner towards achieving targets in accordance with Mine Safety Standards, Policies and Procedures.

Duties & Responsibilities

  • Develop and maintain geotechnical data collection guidelines for use across all AME sites.
  • Train site‑based teams in sound and consistent data collection practices aligned with the guidelines.
  • Consolidate core logging, window mapping, laboratory testing, and field observation data into a secure central database (data collection is performed by site teams).
  • Analyse geotechnical data to verify validation status, identify inconsistencies, and provide actionable feedback to sites to resolve validation issues.
  • Produce annual factual data reports for each site, demonstrating data completeness and validation, and providing the geotechnical parameters required for design and operational decision‑making.
  • Develop and update annual Mining Rock Mass Models for each mining area to capture the geotechnical parameters required for engineering design.
  • Ensure all data management, reporting, and modelling activities comply with relevant standards, codes, and internal quality processes.

Qualification Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Geology.
  • Master’s Degree in Structural Geology or Geotechnical Engineering (preferred).


Experience and Skills Requirements

  • Minimum of 6 years of experience in mining geotechnical engineering, including exposure to structural modelling in Leapfrog.
  • Strong understanding of geology and structural geology.
  • Competency in mining geotechnical engineering principles.
  • Proficiency with Leapfrog, RSData, Excel, and Word.
  • Knowledge of SQL databases and relevant programming languages.
  • Effective spoken and written communication in English.
  • Strong mentoring capabilities.
  • Demonstrated safety mindset.
  • Effective collaboration, particularly with geology teams and across multiple sites.
  • Proven problem‑solving skills.
  • Clear and proactive communication.
  • Must be willing and able to travel to all AME sites as required.
  • Must be capable of working remotely when not travelling.
