The Hong Kong Palace Museum (HKPM) is a dedicated museum that showcases the exquisite artefacts from Palace Museum’s collections and collaborates with other museums in research, exhibitions, education and public programmes. The museum comprises 7 800 square metres of gallery space for standing and special exhibitions on Palace Museum’s collections of paintings, calligraphy, antiquities and historical objects, as well as thematic displays on world cultures and civilisations.


Reporting to the Deputy Director and Chief Curator, the Head Curator directs and supervises the Curatorial Affairs Section comprising 5 units, namely Palace Culture, Objects, Painting and Calligraphy, History and Library, and World Art and Textiles, with a team of over 20 curatorial staffers. The position provides leadership and expertise in the formulation of the curatorial plans for future thematic and special exhibitions, and the development of museum collection, as well as curatorial policies and strategic plan in support of the HKPM’s institutional goals.


You will be responsible for:

  • assisting the Museum Director and Deputy Director and Chief Curator in formulating and implementing curatorial policies, including the policies of acquisition, research and exhibition, as well as strategic plans;
  • supporting the Deputy Director and Chief Curator in the planning and implementation of a dynamic mix of exhibitions, research, publications and curatorial activities, with an aim to engage diverse audiences, to develop their understanding of Chinese and world arts and culture;
  • collaborating with the Palace Museum on matters related to the curation of exhibitions related to the Palace Museum collection at the HKPM, as well as other collaborations on research and curatorial matters;
  • supporting the Museum Director and Deputy Director and Chief Curator to advance the museum’s collection building programme by proactively seeking donations from prospective donors;
  • developing relationships and networks with international, domestic and local museums and institutions, as well as stakeholder groups such as collectors, donors, and partners to identify collaborative opportunities and attract local, regional, and global attention to the HKPM;
  • managing the Curatorial Affairs section by providing coaching and guidance to staff members for delivering exhibitions and programming from conception through to implementation in a professional manner as well as plan for staff training and career development;
  • supervising the team responsible for the Museum’s staff research library;
  • preparing and monitoring the annual budget related to curatorial affairs at the HKPM;
  • taking an important role in managing the HKPM-PolyU Joint Chinese Textile Centre;
  • collaborating closely with other teams, such as exhibition planning and management, learning and engagement, design, conservation and collection teams; and
  • performing any duties from time to time as reasonably as assigned by HKPM.

You should:

  • possess a recognised university post-doctoral degree or above in History, Art History, Fine Arts, Archaeology, Anthropology, Cultural Studies, Museum Studies, or other relevant fields;
  • have at least 12 years of work experience in curating large-scale exhibitions and other museum related work with strong reputation for scholarship and curatorship, which preferrably 5 years of supervisory experience;
  • possess good knowledge of museum policies, standards and practices, experience in conducting research, managing budget, publishing, personnel management;
  • have extensive international museum connections;
  • be able to work well under pressure to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks / projects concurrently; and
  • have excellent written and oral communication skills in Chinese and English.
