Head Start Teacher Assistant
Position Purpose:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>To assist the teacher in providing a successful, safe and supervised\neducational setting for children, while they are in the Head Start environment\n(classroom, outdoor play area, and field trips).<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>To assist in the promotion of social, emotional, physical, and cognitive\ndevelopment of Head Start children relative to the Creative Curriculum, Head\nStart Performance Standards/Domains and Licensing guidelines.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>To encourage parental involvement in all aspects of the program<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>To assist in the development of individual goals for children, provide\non\-going assessment on progress and facilitate transition into kindergarten.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Head Start teaching assistants nationwide in center\-based programs have\-\n\-<\/span> 1) <\/span>At\nleast a Child Development Associate (CDA) credential;<\/span> 2) <\/span>Enrolled\nin a program leading to an associate or baccalaureate degree; or<\/span> 3) <\/span>Enrolled in a child development\nassociate credential program to be completed within two years.<\/span> <\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Certificate/transcripts will be required to validate ECE coursework or\nrelated classes.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Prefer demonstrated classroom ability, typically one\-year full\-time\npreschool classroom experience or equivalent.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Knowledge of typical behaviors/expectations of three and four year old\nchildren usually gained through a minimum of one\-year of relevant experience.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Excellent communication skills, especially good listening and writing\nskills.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>If a licensed driver, employee must have a valid Virginia Driver's\nLicense and proof of current auto insurance where applicable.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Employment is conditional pending immediate enrollment in Child Care\nDivision \- Criminal History Registry.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Must present current TB/Physical at the time of employment or within 10\nworking days for TB test and 30 days for physical.<\/span> <\/span> <\/span>Physical/Mental Abilities and Processes:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>Frequent significant decisions to assure developmental progress of\nchildren.<\/span> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>Demonstrated ability to supervise preschool children and ensure a safe\nlearning environment including the ability to monitor and respond to events\ngoing on at all times in classroom, outdoor play areas and on field trips. This\nincludes the physical ability to move quickly in order to respond to children\nwho are very active and may need restraint or redirection in order to insure\ntheir safety or the safety of others in the environment.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Ability to respond appropriately (both mentally and physically) to an\nemergency or a crisis situation.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Daily kneeling, stooping, bending, and sitting on the floor to attend to\nchildren's needs.<\/span> <\/span> Position Information:<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>11 or 12\-month position, depending on program model<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Supervised by Education Specialist, Assistant Education Specialist and\nTeacher.<\/span> <\/span> Essential Job\nResponsibilities: Performance Indicators<\/span><\/u><\/b> <\/span> Child\nContact/Classroom Time (40%)<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist in meeting the needs of all children, including those with\nspecial needs, those who are gifted, and those who are culturally diverse.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist in integrating all Head Start service areas into classroom time.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist in developing and utilizing lesson plans, which reflect mandated\nelements, parental and cultural influences, and promote the social, emotional,\nphysical, and cognitive development of Head Start children.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Implement ongoing early child/family literacy activities.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Follow a consistent schedule, which includes small and large group\nexperiences, choice time, music and movement, large and small motor activities,\nskill development, meals, and effective transitions between activities.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Observe and record behaviors of children to assist the teacher in the\nidentification of each child's strengths and areas to grow.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Encourage experimentation, exploration, problem solving, cooperation,\nsocialization, and choice making, ask open\-ended questions and listen\nrespectfully to the answers.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Provide an atmosphere that promotes and reinforces parental involvement\nin the classroom.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist with ongoing assessments for children and record data using the\nCreative Curriculum and Teaching Strategies Gold web\-based assessment tool.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist with the supervision and monitoring of children at all times.<\/span> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>Respond to crisis or emergency situations that may occur and provide\nfirst aid and/or CPR. <\/span>Prevent the spread\nof blood borne pathogens, and access emergency services as needed.<\/span> Written\nDocumentation (20%)<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist in maintaining accurate written records; including assessments,\nspecial education documentation, screening instruments, anecdotal observations,\ndocuments for transition to public school and parent/teacher conference, home\nvisits and other required forms.<\/span> <\/span>Collaborative\nService Delivery/Home Visits (15%)<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>Participate in regularly scheduled team meetings to plan for and deliver\ncollaborative services across all service areas.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Serve as a Bus Monitor to help ensure children's safety to and from Head\nStart centers.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Meet regularly with parents, and other staff regarding each child's\nstatus and progress.<\/span> · <\/span><\/span><\/span>Assist in conducting two regular home visits and parent/teacher\nconferences for purposes of assessment and support, and to share information on\nclassroom progress, educational strategies and parenting.<\/span> <\/span>Curriculum\nDevelopment (20%)<\/span><\/i><\/b> <\/span>· <\/span><\/span><\/span>
