Key Duties and Responsibilities
Core clinical and first aid care
- Provide immediate first aid and short‑term care for students and staff, including assessment, triage, treatment within scope, and safe handover to families or emergency services as needed.
- Monitor students in the health/medical room; reassess symptoms, document observations, and determine return‑to‑class versus send‑home decisions.
- Administer medications according to written authorizations and school policy; maintain secure storage, logs, and inventory for routine and emergency meds (e.g., epinephrine, albuterol).
- Implement and monitor individualized health care plans and emergency action plans for students with conditions such as allergies, asthma, diabetes, epilepsy, and other chronic needs.
- Support return‑to‑learn/return‑to‑play processes after illness or injury; coordinate with counselors, athletic staff, and teachers on needed adjustments.
Care coordination and family communication
- Serve as the primary point of contact for families regarding student health concerns; gather history, clarify care instructions, and provide clear, compassionate updates.
- Prepare medical information and supplies for field trips, athletics, and extracurricular activities; brief trip leaders on student needs and emergency procedures.
Health records, compliance, and data
- Maintain accurate, confidential health records, visit logs, medication consents, allergy lists, and care plans in the school’s information system, consistent with privacy requirements and local regulations.
- Provide up‑to‑date, evidence‑based health information for school communications in line with CHP/EDB guidance and clinical judgment
- Coordinate school involvement in government‑provided health services including screenings, dental checks, and vaccination programs.
Training, readiness, and safety equipment
- Coordinate staff training and refreshers in first aid, CPR/AED, anaphylaxis response, seizure first aid, and use of emergency medications.
- Inspect and maintain first aid kits, health room supplies, and AEDs across all campuses; ensure standardized contents and documented checks.
- Contribute as required to the school’s Emergency Management Plans for medical emergencies; participate in drills and debriefs; maintain grab‑and‑go medical kits.
Requirements
- Current CPR/AED and First Aid certification suitable for pediatric and adult care; willingness to renew on schedule.
- Training in anaphylaxis management and use of emergency medications (e.g., epinephrine auto‑injector); familiarity with asthma inhalers/spacers, seizure first aid, and basic diabetes care.
- Excellent written and verbal communication; ability to explain health guidance clearly and sensitively to non‑medical audiences.
- Competence with electronic recordkeeping and basic office tools (e.g., student information systems, Google Workspace); rigorous attention to confidentiality and data protection.
- Proven ability to coordinate health logistics for trips, events, and multi‑campus operations; organized, reliable, and detail‑focused.
- Current nursing license or prior experience as a school nurse would be advantageous
