The Opportunity:
The Heavy Diesel Fitter reports to the Plant Manager and is responsible for carrying out maintenance, repairs, and inspections on rail plant and heavy diesel equipment across the business, including on-track machinery and associated assets.
The Heavy Diesel Fitter will work across both workshop and site environments, performing fault finding, component change-outs, and servicing to ensure all plant & equipment is safe, compliant, and available for operations.
The Heavy Diesel Fitter plays a key role in minimising downtime while ensuring strict adherence to safety, compliance, and operational requirements.
Responsibilities:
- Service all plant and equipment in accordance with OEM specifications and industry standards
- Ensure all plant and equipment is clean, serviceable, and ready for deployment to sites
- Conduct planned maintenance, breakdown repairs and fault finding on various rail and earthmoving plant and equipment, on-track machines (e.g. tampers, hi-rail vehicles, ballast regulators where applicable) including Heavy diesel support equipment and small tools as required
- Perform component change-outs (e.g. hydraulic pumps, cylinders, engines, transmissions, braking components)
- Diagnose and repair faults across Hydraulic systems, Mechanical systems, Drivetrain and rail interface systems
- Record all servicing, repairs and maintenance activities and ensure accurate reporting within maintenance systems (e.g. LinkedSite or equivalent), review and action Daily Plant Inspections (DPIs), ensuring defects are prioritised and rectified
- Maintain appropriate stock levels of critical spare parts to support both planned works and urgent breakdown
Required Skills and Competencies
- Certificate III in Mobile Plant Technology / Engineering (Mechanical) or equivalent
- Minimum 5+ years’ experience as a Heavy Diesel Fitter working on heavy plant and equipment
- Demonstrated experience in fault finding, diagnostics, and breakdown repairs in both workshop and field environments
- Proven experience performing component change-outs and major repairs (e.g. engines, transmissions, hydraulics)
- Construction Induction (White Card)
- Current Driver Licence – Minimum MR (HR preferred)
- Strong knowledge of hydraulic, mechanical and drivetrain systems
- Ability to diagnose faults and determine root cause
