If you want to join a team committed to public service and infrastructure excellence, we are looking for you! As a Heavy Equipment Operator with the Flood Control District of Maricopa County, you will play a vital role in maintaining and repairing critical flood control infrastructure, including earthen dams, levees, basins, floodways, channels, and access roads. Under general supervision, you will perform skilled equipment operations that help safeguard residents, businesses, and public assets from flood-related impacts.
The Flood Control District of Maricopa County provides essential services to residents and visitors throughout the county. To support operational needs, employees may occasionally be required to work alternate schedules. When schedule adjustments are necessary, supervisors will provide reasonable advance notice.
Note: We are hiring for two positions. One role will be based at our Phoenix Yard located at 9601 N 21st Dr, Phoenix, AZ 85021. The other role will be based at our Buckeye Yard located at 19604 W Blue Horizons Pkwy N, Buckeye, AZ 85326.

We Require
Three years of work experience operating trucks and heavy equipment
High school diploma or GED
Must possess a valid Arizona Commercial Class A Driver’s License (CDL); specific technical training, certifications, or license endorsements may be required for some job assignments
State and federal regulations require Maricopa County to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for all positions that require an applicant to possess a commercial driver’s license (CDL). Maricopa County is also required to conduct a pre-employment safety history investigation for positions that directly impact commercial motor vehicle safety, but may not specifically require a valid CDL
Other Requirements
Must be able to obtain a Tanker Endorsement within 30 days of hire
A post-offer drug screen is required for this position
We Also Value
Experience with safe and efficient operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment, according to standard operating and safety procedures
Experience with flood control structures, road construction, maintenance, and repair methods, materials, and techniques of dust and noise control
Experience with any of the following equipment: Scraper, 8,000-gallon Water Wagon, D-6 and above Dozers, mid to large size Excavator
Knowledge of dust abatement techniques to comply with the Maricopa County Air Quality Department’s Rule 310
Job Contributions
Operate a variety of medium to heavy-sized construction and maintenance equipment/vehicles in accordance with all safety regulations and procedures to perform duties on maintenance projects to construct, repair, and maintain roads on FCD projects and properties
Haul materials and transport vehicles and equipment to job sites using various trucks and transporters
Pre-check, clean, and perform routine maintenance on heavy equipment; identify and report mechanical problems that require additional repair. Complete required daily logs and prepare reports; attend safety meetings
Operate equipment and train personnel in the safe and efficient operation and maintenance of heavy construction and maintenance equipment according to standard operating and safety procedures
Performs traffic control activities
Performs other duties as assigned
Working Conditions
Exerting 50 - 100 pounds occasionally, 10 - 25 pounds frequently, or up to 10 - 20 pounds constantly
Incumbent may be subjected to extreme temperatures, wetness/humidity, respiratory hazards, and noise and vibration
Incumbent may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, poor ventilation, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises, and travel
The work will occur in an office and field environment. While performing the duties and responsibilities, the employee may be exposed to loud noise, noxious odors, unsanitary conditions, chemicals, electricity, moving mechanical parts, varying weather conditions, and other related conditions and situations. Position is subject to atmospheric conditions: Fumes, odors, dust, mists, gases, or poor ventilation
Machines, Tools, Equipment, Software, and Hardware
This position generally conducts business out in the field, utilizing various equipment and hand tools for numerous construction and maintenance duties, including shovels, rakes, pickaxes, brooms, and various-sized electric and hand tools. Familiarity with four-wheel-drive capabilities and self-recovery winching techniques will be needed from time to time.
Protective Equipment Required
Fieldwork will often be conducted in remote locations under potentially extreme weather environments. Attire for the position will be provided and maintained by Maricopa County and may include General Construction and/or Field Inspection PPE required to perform duties on a daily basis. This includes but is not limited to safety-toe footwear, hard hats, high-visibility vests, eye protection, and durable pants such as jeans.
