Job Title: Heavy Equipment Operator

Location: Winnipeg, MB

Position Summary:

The Equipment Operator operates heavy machinery and equipment used in the arborary industry. Their primary responsibility is to ensure the proper functioning and safe operation of heavy-duty equipment, while maintaining the safety of other team members and the environment.

Essential Job Duties:

  • Landscape maintenance, including stump grinding
  • Skid-steer operations
  • Conduct an initial equipment inspection to ensure machinery is safe and ready for the day’s tasks
  • Adjust operations based on changing conditions or shifting project needs
  • Set up the worksite, ensuring the equipment is positioned correctly for safe operation
  • Help organize the materials and equipment needed for specific tasks (e.g., ensuring the right attachments are used)
  • Assess the terrain or job conditions to adjust equipment settings or approaches
  • Help enforce on-the-job safety practices for crew members
  • Identify potential problems with machinery before they become major issues, making minor repairs as needed, and informing the supervisor
  • Safeguard employees and the public from hazards in and around the work area, cooperating with customers, police, and fire departments when blocking streets or driveways
  • Set up barriers, warning signs, and flags to protect both employees and the public, while being trained to perform tree and bucket rescues
  • Ensure equipment is cleaned and properly stored at the end of each shift
  • Keep accurate records of equipment usage, maintenance, and fuel consumption
  • Report on the job progress, site conditions, and any issues that arise
  • Document equipment damage or accidents according to company protocols
  • Perform fertilization tasks, including root injection for trees and soap application for insect control
  • Support, actively participate, and act in accordance with Wright’s culture of safety and employee ownership
  • Comply with applicable federal, provincial, and municipal laws, state, and local laws, rules, and regulations; maintains knowledge of and follows all company policies and procedures
  • Maintain regular and punctual attendance at work and meetings

Other Duties:

  • Occasional travel outside of the office may be required
  • During emergencies or natural disasters may be required to be on duty for the duration of the disaster
  • Works around excessive noise from machines, chainsaws, woodchipper and must wear proper personal protective equipment

Knowledge, Skills & Ability Requirements:

  • Grapple truck experience preferred
  • Experience in working around hazardous equipment
  • Proficiency in operating and maintaining tools and equipment
  • Enforces on-the-job safety practices
  • Ability to guide and lead those on the job
  • Possesses the ability to lift move and maneuver up to 50 pounds on an infrequent basis and up to 30 pounds on a frequent basis
  • Ability to prioritize competing tasks as new situations continue to emerge
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite products utilizing the latest operating systems
  • Experience with Apple-based products
  • Demonstrate excellent customer service focusing on rapport-building, listening, questioning and patience
  • Comfortable working in noisy environments with proper PPE
  • Willingness to work long hours, overtime, and participate in on-call rotations during emergencies
  • Ability to operate and service all required tools and equipment
  • Ability to read, write and speak English sufficient to perform job duties and to interact and communicate with employees and vendors

Education, Certification & Experience Requirements:

  • A High School Diploma or higher
  • Valid Class 1 license with air brakes and current driver's abstract
  • Experience operating heavy equipment such as Tandem Axel Grapple Truck and Sennebogen equipment

Other Preferred Requirements:

  • Willingness to obtain
  • Valid First-Aid and CPR certificates
