HIM Identity Specialist

Under the supervision of the HIM Supervisor provides support to the HIM Department and Members of the Medical Staff to ensure the electronic legal patient medical record and demographic data meets regulatory requirements and supports high quality patient care by being legible, complete and accurate. Assists with general duties as needed to ensure information is easily accessible and available in a timely manner to authorized users and protected health information is maintained in a confidential manner. Supports patients with ensuring complete and accurate birth certificate data and timely filing of paternity documents.All job qualifications listed indicate the minimum level necessary to perform this job proficiently.

LEVEL OF EDUCATION

Minimum:
  • Proof of completion of at least the first year of a formal education program in Health Information Management.

Preferred:
  • Completion of certification or degree program in Health Information management.


CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Preferred:
  • RHIT


TECHNICAL REQUIREMENTS

Minimum:
  • Intermediate Microsoft Office Suite skills. Knowledge of health information, multiple MRNs, breaches, and medical terminology.

  • Must be able to work independently and interact professionally with public, physicians and hospital personnel. This position requires the following abilities: critical thinking skills to identify and locate information maintained in various mediums and locations, knowledge of medical record forms and documentation requirements, understanding of patient information and process flow in an acute care environment, ability to use critical thinking skills to problem solve, must be able to read, understand and reiterate regulatory requirements, must be able to respond correctly to a multitude of information requests, must be able to respond quickly to stat requests, must be able to perform multiple tasks simultaneously.
  • This position works closely with a variety of customers including but not limited to hospital and department staff, the public and members of the Medical Staff and must be able to instruct and provide feedback in a positive and constructive manner and diplomatically deal with uncomfortable issues.
  • The employee communicates effectively. This position requires high level communication skills to be able to train new and existing staff in various procedures, explain complex regulatory requirements to providers and other staff members, and to interact with unhappy customers in an effective, friendly and appropriate manner.
