Independent Contractor: Facilitator, Assessor, Critical Reviewer and Developer – Data Science (NQF 7)

The Position


We are seeking an experienced and adaptable External Contractor in Data Science to support the delivery and ongoing development of a commerce-focused Data Science qualification.


This is a multi-functional academic role, where you may be engaged, depending on operational needs and your expertise, in one or more of the following areas:

  • Facilitation
  • Assessment
  • Critical review of material

You will contribute to building a high-quality, applied Data Science learning experience that prepares students to operate effectively at the intersection of data, technology, and business decision-making.

Depending on allocation, responsibilities may include:

Facilitation

  • Facilitate engaging, student-centred online learning
  • Guide students through complex data science concepts
  • Support student learning through discussion and academic support


Assessment

  • Assess student submissions in line with academic standards
  • Provide clear, constructive, and developmental feedback
  • Ensure consistency and fairness in marking


Critical Review of material

  • Critical review of qualification and material
  • Contribute to the design or revision of:
    • Learning materials
    • Assessments
    • Module content
  • Ensure content is current, applied, and aligned with industry practice

Education & Experience Requirements

  • A relevant Master’s degree in Data Science, Computer Science, Information Systems or a relevant field (NQF 8)
  • Teaching, tutoring, or facilitation experience in higher education or professional learning environments
  • Demonstrated knowledge of data analytics concepts and tools (e.g., Excel, Power BI, Tableau, SQL, Python, R, or similar)
  • Strong analytical, communication, and feedback skills
  • Excellent organisational and time-management abilities
  • Familiarity with online learning platforms and digital engagement tools
  • A passion for student learning, development, and academic quality

Work Environment Requirements

  • Stable, high-speed internet access (preferably fibre)
  • A quiet, professional home working environment suitable for remote teaching
  • This is a fully remote position
