Instructor Per Diem, Adult Education (52138)
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
• Provide instruction to students enrolled in English for Speakers of Other Language (ESOL) classes and/or Adult Basic Education (ABE)/ Spanish High School Equivalency (HSE) classes on an as-needed basis;
• Deliver prepared lesson plans and/or adapt existing curriculum to meet student needs during assigned shifts;
• Incorporate computer-based or online learning activities into instruction when applicable;
• Maintain basic documentation of student attendance and participation for assigned sessions;
• Administer informal assessments or support ongoing student evaluation as directed by program staff;
• Communicate relevant student progress, needs, or concerns to the Program Coordinator of designee;
• Refer students to internal support services as appropriate
• Coordinate with Program Coordinator and instructional team to ensure continuity of instruction;
• Participate in periodic check-ins as needed;
• Attend trainings and staff meetings as available and relevant to scheduled work hours;
• Perform other related duties as assigned within the scope of per-diem work.
COMPETENCIES
• Two years teaching experience in ESOL and/or ABE/HSE preferred;
• Experience delivering or adapting lesson plans in a classroom setting;
• Strong interpersonal and communication skills;
• Ability to create an engaging, inclusive, and supportive learning environment;
• Flexibility and responsiveness in a dynamic classroom setting;
• Willing to go above and beyond program mandates for the benefit of the students;
• Ability to understand the concepts of institutional and structural racism and bias and their impact on underserved and underrepresented communities;
• Have a demonstrated commitment to supporting communities who have experienced systemic oppression and bias (e.g. people of color, LGBTQ+ people, immigrants, justice involved persons, etc.);
• Bilingual (Spanish/English) preferred or required – dependent upon program needs.
EDUCATION EXPERIENCE
Must possess a Bachelor’s degree in related field; license to teach with the NYC Department of Education preferred
