Intern- Water

This role is to work as part of a team to support the delivery of projects. This role will be working under the supervision of a senior or principal engineer to carry out the following functions.

  • Assist in design tasks by supporting senior engineers in preparing layouts, drawings, and basic calculations for wet utilities such as sewerage, stormwater, and potable water networks.

  • Learn design standards and company procedures by shadowing experienced engineers and applying guidance to assigned tasks.

  • Support project documentation including checking drawings, preparing notes, and ensuring files are organized to required quality standards.

  • Understand project scope by participating in team discussions and assisting in meeting prescribed deadlines under supervision.

  • Provide status updates on assigned tasks, highlighting any challenges or learning needs to the line manager or senior engineer.

  • Participate in meetings to observe project coordination and contribute where appropriate to team morale and collaboration.

  • Coordinate with CAD technicians under guidance, ensuring requirements and timelines are communicated clearly.

  • Stay updated with relevant technical developments by engaging in training sessions, workshops, and self‑learning.

  • Follow health & safety practices in all assigned work, in line with company policies.

  • Support sustainability initiatives by learning how design decisions contribute to sustainable outcomes.

  • Identify improvements by sharing fresh ideas or observations that can enhance team efficiency or client service.

Key Competencies / Skills:

Mandatory skills

  • Educational background in Civil/Environmental Engineering or a related discipline, with exposure to wet utilities such as sewerage, stormwater, and potable water systems.

  • Basic knowledge of software such as WaterGEMS, SewerGEMS, StormCAD, or equivalent academic training.

  • Awareness of standards and manuals relevant to utilities design (GCC or equivalent), gained through coursework or project work.

  • Computer literacy with proficiency in MS Excel and ability to learn modelling tools quickly.

  • Communication skills in English, both written and verbal, to support collaboration and reporting.

Key competencies expected are :

  • Collaboration & Teamwork: Ability to work closely with senior engineers and CAD technicians, supporting tasks and learning from guidance.

  • Technical Learning: Willingness to absorb technical knowledge, apply engineering fundamentals, and develop design capability.

  • Adaptability: Flexibility to take on varied tasks, openness to feedback, and eagerness to grow in a professional consulting environment.

Desired Skills

  • Exposure to infrastructure fields such as roads, highways, water networks, pumping stations, and treatment works through academic projects, internships, or coursework.

  • Interest in GCC standards and willingness to learn about regional design manuals and approval processes.

  • Understanding of approvals: Awareness of how design approvals (NOCs) are coordinated with government agencies, with eagerness to gain practical experience.

  • Adaptability to support varied tasks across complementary infrastructure disciplines.

  • Team collaboration and openness to feedback while learning professional consulting practices.

  • At least BEng (Civil or Environmental Engineering).
