About The Bancroft School:

The Bancroft School is a unique educational program that aims to empower students with autism by providing teachable moments throughout their day. In addition to traditional academic subjects, the program also focuses on daily living and social skills. Art and music, along with Adaptive Physical Education and Enrichment activities and an activity pool for water safety, swim instruction, and recreation are all part of the Bancroft experience.

Position Overview

As a member of the education team, provides ongoing job assessment, job development, skills training, and on-site job coaching to students to identify, maintain, and enhance community-based employment both on- and off-campus.

Responsibilities

  • Performs activities associated with the ongoing job development of students to best match the job preferences and needs of both the student and the prospective employer:
    • Conducts job assessments on an ongoing basis with students to identify individual job preferences, interests, abilities, and satisfaction for subsequent individual and group work assignments;
    • Identifies and proactively approaches prospective employer organizations to encourage the employment of students within their organizations; e.g., serves on academic business committees, accesses existing employer database/network, attends job fairs, etc.;
    • In consort with prospective employers, surveys, develops, and documents job openings for matching to students; conducts/coordinates and evaluates job sampling activities and on-site tours of employer job site to determine job suitability;
    • Works one-on-one with students to identify individual career goals, document career development plan, encourage progressive career growth, develop a resume, accompany students to job interviews, provide support in completing job applications, etc. Supports and provides information to students regarding Social Security benefits, Unemployment benefits, etc., and refers students to appropriate agency/issue specialist, as needed.
  • Provides individual job coaching and mentoring to students to encourage and support social integration and the development of natural supports at employer job sites:
    • Provides support to students at employer job site with job training needs; e.g., explaining employer organization’s policies and procedures, providing orientation regarding job structure and management’s performance expectations, reorienting persons served to job and management changes, providing instruction regarding proper utilization of equipment, explaining appropriate personal appearance and attire at job site, etc.;
    • Facilitates the social integration of students into the existing employer job site; strives to build and maintain effective on-the-job work relationships to encourage the development of natural supports for persons served and coworkers and promote a level of acceptance in the workplace;
    • Provides sensitivity training and support to employers and coworkers when the need is identified or when specifically requested by employer;
    • Provides safety instruction to students in the workplace and within the community to ensure a safe and secure work environment;
    • Provides ongoing follow-along supports to students, employer, and coworkers up through graduation.
  • Maintains all levels of supervision for students at specific job site as outlined in the Individual Education Plan (IEP). Follows established Bancroft policies and procedures and maintains compliance with Division of Developmental Disabilities (DDD) and N.J. Department of Education (DOE) regulations, applicable state/local/federal regulations, Department of Labor (DOL) regulations, and Commission on Accreditation of Rehabilitation Facilities (CARF) standards at all times.
  • Complies with the IEP as detailed for students and supports the development of goals as determined by employer. Provides goal training and instruction, and assists each student in the achievement of goals while actively encouraging individual independence within ability limits. Attends employers’ annual performance review meeting with students to ensure the mutual attainment of job expectations and to discuss performance issues, training needs, job site concerns, etc.
  • Maintains an overall awareness of current and changing rules and regulations regarding employment issues; e.g., Department of Labor (DOL), Social Security, ADA, etc., as they impact the employment of persons served at prospective and current employer organizations.
  • Aids in the resolution of problematic situations that may occur for students at the job site. Exercises appropriate judgment in addressing specific situations.
  • As needed, coordinates student transportation needs and/or may safely transport students to a job site.

Qualifications

Education & Experience Requirements:

  • High School Diploma or equivalent
  • Minimum of three (3) years of direct support experience, preferably within an educational or classroom-based setting
  • A Bachelor’s degree in a related field preferred but no required
  • Prior experience working with individuals with developmental disabilities is strongly preferred
