Laboratory Officer (Red Cell Reference Lab) - Patient Services Division

[What the role is]

We are looking for a committed individual to be part of the Blood Services Group (BSG), Patient Services Division. The appointee for this position will be a laboratory officer in the Red Cell Reference Laboratory, which provides patient-centric laboratory services in the area of red cell immunohaematology. As a Laboratory Officer in Red Cell Reference Laboratory, you will be rostered to do shift work. The shifts are 12-hours long with a combination of morning and night shifts, i.e. 8am to 8pm, and 8pm to 8am. You will also be required to work weekend and public holiday shifts as rostered.

[What you will be working on]

Responsibilities:-

  • To perform all tests and processes in the assigned laboratory in BSG, within set standard operating procedures and guidelines, with the objective of ensuring an efficient blood programme, and the quality and safety of the national blood supply.
  • Prepare specialised blood components for patients with specific requirements
  • Operate specialised laboratory procedures for transplant support services
  • Provide support in the red cell reference laboratory which provides specialised referral services to hospitals and clinical laboratories that encounter difficulties in red cell antibody investigation and resolution of ABO discrepancies.

[What we are looking for]

Requirements:-

  • Relevant academic qualifications in Science, Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent
  • 3 – 5 years working experience in an immunohaematology laboratory
  • Knowledgeable about basic laboratory practices and procedures, including safety requirements
  • Good laboratory technical skills
  • Comfortable working with the computer and using specialisted laboratory software
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills
  • Willing to work 12-hour shifts, which will include overnight shift, weekends and public holiday shifts.

The appointee can look forward to a salary package comprising of basic salary, shift allowances, shoe allowance, bonus payments and other staff benefits.
