Jefferson County is seeking a well-qualified, motivated Laboratory Supervisor to perform work that involves planning, organizing, directing and evaluating activities of the Barton Water Pollution Control Laboratory consisting of chemical and biological analyses. In addition to conducting laboratory analyses and interpreting and reporting results, employees in this job class are responsible for supervising functions within their department. Laboratory Supervisors manage a team of individuals through the assignment and review of work, training and development, and other essential personnel related functions. Employees operate with considerable independence and ensure appropriate safety standards and protocol are maintained. This position reports to the Environmental Laboratory/Compliance Administrator.COMPENSATION & BENEFITS:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
The following are job-related qualifications that are required for employment consideration for this position:
Driver’s license.
Bachelor's degree from an accredited university in biology, chemistry, or environmental science.
Experience analyzing environmental samples and interpreting results of analysis, such as analysis of nutrients, metals, and wet chemistry (e.g., coliform, dissolved oxygen, biological oxygen demand).

Experience in a laboratory setting subject to EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) or ADEM (Alabama Department of Environmental Management) compliance rules.
Experience in a laboratory associated with the treatment of wastewater, environmental sampling (e.g., river water, stormwater), or drinking water.
Experience working with data information management systems software (e.g., WIMS, LIMS).
Master's degree in chemistry, environmental science, or biology.
TYPICAL JOB DUTIES:
Manages interactive process of communicating results of laboratory analysis to wastewater treatment plants, permitted industries, and landfills, and coordinating/implementing corrective actions and associated analyses to ensure ongoing permit compliance.
Tracks inventory of supplies and equipment, and assists with the completion of the laboratory’s budget by compiling information, approving purchases, monitoring the inventory, and receiving deliveries.
Designs and implements quality assurance/quality control plans for all analytical procedures by validating analyses being performed by lab personnel.
Ensures the safety of laboratory by maintaining Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) files, inspecting laboratory equipment, developing disaster plans, inspecting wastewater treatment plant for safety violations, and maintaining inventory of safety supplies/equipment.
Reviews laboratory analysis reports for accuracy and completeness by interpreting wastewater test results documented in various reports, chain of custody forms, permits, and the Water Information Management Solution (WIMS).
Supervises staff by assigning and distributing work, directing staff in their job duties, monitoring progress of work, providing feedback and/or training.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Job is primarily sedentary involving sitting for long periods of time, but may involve occasional walking or standing for brief periods. May involve occasional lifting of items or objects weighing up to 50 lbs.WORK ENVIRONMENT:
Work is conducted almost exclusively indoors in a laboratory setting. Job may require exposure occasionally to biological and/or chemical hazards. Work involves use of standard office equipment, such as computer, phone, copier, etc. and the use of laboratory tools and equipment necessary for the conducting of chemical tests. This job requires wearing common protective or safety equipment such as safety glasses, gloves, and lab jackets.EEO STATEMENT:
