Lead Artist

A Bit About Us

Gamemode One was founded 8 years ago to do things right in the Minecraft gaming space - especially doing right by our staff, and right by our players. We care deeply about our vibrant company culture, which enables us all to do our best work. We are looking to scale to meet our full potential, while continuing to prioritize staff wellbeing, and make excellent games.

The Opportunity

In our growing organization, you’ll lead the art execution on ambitious projects in our Minecraft team. You’ll deliver high-impact assets that raise quality standards, while helping the team stay aligned on visual goals and feedback.

You’ll support planning, reviews, and production across disciplines, and help the team respond to IP feedback without losing momentum. You’ll bring strong game art pipeline experience, and you’ll grow your leadership skills as you mentor other artists and help strengthen how we build and ship art at Gamemode One.

What do we mean when we say ‘Experienced’?

This role is listed at an experience level of “Experienced”. We know that this can mean something different across employers. For us, this means we are looking for someone who already has strong experience creating production-ready game art and contributing to an art pipeline in a team setting. We are looking for someone who will be confident taking ownership of project art quality and alignment. You will raise the quality bar while helping the team ship great work. This is likely not the role for you if you are still building core game art fundamentals or aren’t comfortable with leading and supporting other artists.

Within 6 months, you’ll…

  • Produce hero assets and raise the quality bar for project deliverables.
  • Improve the art pipeline by identifying gaps and helping implement better processes.
  • Mentor artists with hands on support during production, including modelling company values and healthy feedback culture.
  • Settle into reliable leadership rhythms, including 1:1’s, and involvement in goal-setting.

Why our job descriptions look like this

Our job descriptions look different than the average, and that’s on purpose! We find the normal approach to be far too prescriptive. Defining explicit qualifications and requirements would be us defining how you should have acquired a certain skillset. What these generally achieve is intimidating those who don’t fit the mold to not apply. That’s not our style. In an effort to be inclusive, and clear, we take a more descriptive approach. Read through the opportunity, and the description of the work you’ll be doing. Decide for yourself if the work excites you, and is something that you are able to rise to the challenge of.
