  • What you’ll do:

  • Be accountable for the end‑to‑end operational health of Digital Certificates and Key Management services, including availability, incident management, risk management, and continuous improvement.
  • Provide line management and people leadership for engineers working in the Digital Certificates and Key Management domain, including performance management, coaching, and development.
  • Ensure Digital Certificates and Key Management services are built and operated in line with security policy, regulatory expectations, and audit requirements, with appropriate controls embedded into engineering and operational practices.
  • Digital Certificates and Key Management activities are performed by the engineering team. The Engineering Lead is accountable for ensuring these activities are correctly prioritised, executed, governed, and evidenced.
  • Maintain sufficient domain knowledge of Digital Certificates and Key Management and cryptographic operations to provide effective oversight, challenge, and assurance of team activities.
  • Actively participate in cryptographic ceremonies (for example Digital Certificates lifecycle and key‑related ceremonies), setting the standard for control discipline, audit readiness, and professional practice.
  • Partner with Risk, Compliance, and Audit stakeholders to address findings, manage control improvements, and demonstrate ongoing assurance.
  • Drive improvements in engineering effectiveness, service reliability, and delivery predictability, balancing change with the realities of operating critical cryptographic services.

What will you be responsible for in this role

  • Accountable for the end‑to‑end operational health of Key Management services, including availability, incident management, risk management, and continuous improvement.
  • Ensure Key Management services are built and operated in line with security policy, regulatory expectations, and audit requirements, with appropriate controls embedded into engineering and operational practices.
  • Key Management / KMO activities are performed by the engineering team. The Engineering Lead is accountable for ensuring these activities are correctly prioritised, executed, governed, and evidenced.
  • Maintain sufficient domain knowledge of Key Management and cryptographic operations to provide effective oversight, challenge, and assurance of team activities.
  • Actively participate in cryptographic ceremonies (for example HSM lifecycle and key‑related ceremonies), setting the standard for control discipline, audit readiness, and professional practice.
  • You will take ownership of improving the platform’s technical and operational maturity, working through and coaching a wide range of engineering capabilities. This includes strengthening design quality, operability, resilience, and maintainability of Key Management services.

You will be expected to drive measurable improvements in engineering efficiency, quality, and delivery predictability, ensuring that change is introduced in a way that protects service stability, control effectiveness, and audit confidence.

A core part of the role is recruiting, retaining, and developing engineering talent, and fostering a culture of learning and continuous improvement within a high‑trust, high‑risk domain. You will act as a visible engineering leader, encouraging the adoption of good practice and external perspectives from the wider technology community where they can be applied safely and appropriately.

Engineering excellence within the team is benchmarked against organisations with mature, well‑governed, and highly reliable security Digital Certificates and Key Management platforms, rather than innovation for its own sake.

    What you’ll need:

  • Senior engineering leadership experience, including people leadership and accountability for delivery and operational outcomes.
  • Strong understanding of Key Management concepts, cryptographic controls, and KMO operating models.
  • Solid grounding in modern engineering practices, with the ability to apply them pragmatically in constrained, high‑risk environments.
  • Comfortable working closely with Product Owners and stakeholders, providing technical and operational input to prioritisation and trade‑off decisions.
  • Nice to have skills:

  • Full lifecycle delivery of scalable, resilient, robust systems
  • Financial Markets technology or technology leaders, but not a deal breaker
  • Brilliant people and communication skills! That includes the ability to manage, influence and coach a wide range of stakeholders.
  • You’ll be comfortable working within multi-disciplinary teams, take a collaborative approach and be genuinely passionate about the fields of engineering and cryptography.
  • Qualifications:

  • B.Tech or equivalent university Degree
  • Exceptional communication and organization skills
  • Strong understanding of Digital Certificates, Key Management concepts, cryptographic controls, and Key Management operating models.
  • Ability to work with all 3 lines of defences at all levels
