Learning & Development Manager (Site-Based)
Position Overview
Barrick’s Africa & Middle East Region are seeking to recruit site-based Learning & Development (L&D) Manager’s.
Barrick AME is standardising L&D to strengthen safety performance, operational readiness, statutory compliance, local workforce development, leadership capability and competency assurance across all operations. The Operations L&D Manager is the senior site-based L&D leader, reporting to the General Manager as a site HOD member, with a functional line to the AME L&D Manager for strategy, standards, Damstra, governance, reporting and Barrick Academy priorities. The role implements AME L&D strategy at site level and ensures the operation has the right people, with the right skills, verified against the right standards, supported by the right systems and evidenced through reliable records.
Key Responsibilities
Site L&D Strategy & Operating Model:
- Translate the AME L&D strategy into a site annual plan;
- Implement the standard site L&D structure, governance routines, role clarity and service model;
- Ensure capability risks are visible in HOD forums and reported monthly to the GM, HOD team and AME L&D.
Safety-Critical Learning & Competency Assurance:
- Implement safety-critical training aligned to site risk, fatal controls, incident learnings and regulatory requirements;
- Move beyond attendance to assessment, field verification, supervisor sign-off and on-the-job application.
Technical, Operational & Leadership Capability:
- Lead site TNA with Mining, Processing, Engineering, Maintenance, Safety, HR and support functions;
- Maintain the learning calendar;
- Implement role-based pathways for operators, artisans, supervisors, technical specialists and future leaders.
Trainer, Assessor & L&D Team Capability:
- Lead, coach and develop the site L&D team;
- Baseline trainer and assessor capability;
- Assure quality of facilitation, practical assessment, workplace coaching, evidence collection, content use and system discipline.
Induction, Onboarding & Contractor Readiness:
- Implement AME standard induction for employees, contractors and visitors;
- Maintain the site-specific induction layer;
- Ensure contractor readiness is risk-based, current, assessed and recorded in Damstra or the approved system.
Learning Systems, Records & Data Integrity:
- Lead disciplined use of Damstra;
- Maintain accurate training records, certifications, permits, licences, matrices and competence evidence;
- Provide dashboards on compliance, competence, overdue items and critical role coverage.
Compliance, Governance & Assurance:
- Ensure compliance with Barrick standards, legal training requirements, statutory appointments, permitting obligations and regulatory requirements;
- Maintain audit-ready evidence and close audit, incident and assurance findings.
Localisation, Succession & Skills Transfer:
- Partner with HR and operations on critical roles, localisation priorities, succession risks and skills transfer;
- Track expatriate-to-local development, trainee, apprentice, graduate, operator, artisan and supervisor pipelines.
Qualification Requirements
- Minimum: Bachelor’s Degree in HR, L&D related field.
- Formal L&D / training qualification.
- Assessor / moderator / workplace assessor certification where applicable.
- Valid driver’s licence.
- Mine-site medical fitness.
- Desirable: Postgraduate L&D / OD / HR / Business qualification
Experience and Skills Requirements
- 8 -10 years in Learning & Development, preferably in remote / multicultural sites.
- Operational capability or technical training, including at least 5 years in a management / senior supervisory L&D role.
- Mining, heavy industry or safety-critical operational experience required.
- Must have managed trainers / assessors, competency-based systems, statutory / safety-critical training, audit readiness, budgets, providers, training plans, learning systems and senior operational forums.
- Damstra / SAP, SF / Cornerstone, localisation, succession, apprentice / graduate / operator / artisan / supervisor pipelines, digital / simulator / workplace verification.
- Knowledge & Skills: Mining / heavy industry operations; fatal risk and safety-critical training; competency-based assessment; adult and workplace learning; TNA; learning design, delivery and evaluation; OJT coaching and verification; governance, QA and audit readiness; statutory requirements; records and evidence control; LMS/data integrity; contractor training; localisation and succession; leadership development; dashboards and reporting; budget, vendor and learning infrastructure management. Strong influencing, planning, reporting, facilitation, coaching, change leadership, data interpretation and constructive challenge skills required.
- Ability to work in remote-site and multicultural environments.
- English language proficiency; French and local languages beneficial.
