Legal Counsel, Product and Regulatory
The Navan Legal Team is looking for a versatile and business-minded attorney with 5-7 years of experience to serve as the primary legal partner for Navan's travel products and a key contributor on expense management matters. This role spans both B2B and B2C travel products and operations, covering product counseling, commercial agreements, regulatory compliance and new business initiatives across Navan's global footprint. The ideal candidate thrives in a fast-paced environment, takes ownership of matters end-to-end and is energized by the challenge of supporting a rapidly scaling global platform. The position is based in San Francisco, California.
What You’ll Do:
- Provide expert, calibrated, helpful legal advice to the Navan business in the US and global offices, including those in Europe, UK and Israel, on product, commercial and regulatory issues across Navan's B2B and B2C travel products and expense management platform.
- Advise product, operations and supplier strategy teams on legal issues spanning B2B and B2C travel products, including partnerships, privacy, travel regulation, consumer terms, advertising and other regulatory matters relevant to product development.
- Review, draft and negotiate commercial agreements, including travel supply, distribution, partnership, advertising/marketing, expense-related vendor and technology service provider agreements, both domestically and internationally
- Proactively educate business partners on legal risks and regulatory developments affecting travel and expense products, and help teams build compliance into their planning processes
- Provide legal support for Navan's expense management products, including Navan Expense and Navan Connect, covering product features, payment processing, card program compliance and related vendor agreements
- Partner with and manage outside legal counsel on specialized matters, including regulatory filings, international compliance and litigation support as needed
What We’re Looking For:
- J.D. degree and membership in good standing in at least one state bar.
- Minimum 5-7 years experience as a practicing attorney is required; prior in-house counseling experience at a technology company is strongly preferred.
- Ideal qualities include experience drafting and negotiating complex commercial transactions and a strong background in e-commerce (e.g., Internet privacy, advertising law, product counseling, consumer-facing product terms and other regulatory issues); experience with travel industry regulations or payment card and financial services compliance is a plus.
- Clear, crisp communication skills, exceptional judgment, and a practical, business-minded approach are essential for success in this role.
- Drive for results and the ability to keep pace with Navan’s rapid global growth and fast-paced culture while managing a high volume of complex, time-sensitive matters with competing deadlines and minimal supervision.
- Track record of establishing strong working relationships with business clients at all levels and within the legal department or law firm.
- Comfortable operating with ambiguity and making judgment calls when precedent or clear guidance is unavailable.
