Position Summary

As part of the Student Health Services Team, the Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN) ) provides direct clinical support, nursing care, and health services to students in accordance with applicable scope of practice, provider orders, and established policies and procedures. This role operates under the direction of the Nurse manager and in collaboration with the Provider and other members of the team. The LPN directly supports patient care and clinic efficiency through patient intake, clinical procedures, documentation in the electronic health record (EHR), infection control practices, and supply/room readiness while maintaining confidentiality and a student-centered approach.

This is a full time 10-month position working 35 hours per week with an annual work period of August 1st – May 31st.

Principal Duties and Essential Functions

Job duties specific to this position:

  • Performs patient intake activities including obtaining a pertinent health history, measuring and recording vital signs, documenting chief complaint, phlebotomy, and preparing students for provider evaluation, while maintaining confidentiality.

  • Provides clinical support during practitioner appointments, examinations, and procedures as requested, including assisting with set-up, patient positioning, and post-visit instructions within LPN scope and training.

  • Collect and handle specimens (e.g., swabs, urine), perform or support point-of-care testing as assigned and trained, and ensure appropriate labeling, processing, and documentation in the EHR.

  • Administer medications and immunizations as ordered and authorized, including prescribed injections per established protocols, and monitors students for expected/urgent reactions in accordance with clinic procedures.

  • Gather information requiring immediate attention and promptly notifying the practitioner and/or Nurse Manager; follows established emergency response procedures.

  • Document nursing actions, interventions, and communications accurately and timely; updates medical records in the EHR in accordance with clinic standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Review incoming laboratory results and route results to the practitioner/Nurse Manager per workflow; communicate follow-up instructions from the provider to students as directed and document outreach per procedure.

  • Communicate and reinforce nurse or provider instructions related to common student health concerns, wellness, prevention, and follow-up care; escalate psychosocial or complex concerns to the practitioner/Nurse Manager and coordinate referrals as appropriate.

  • Maintain clinical competencies relevant to a college health setting (e.g., CPR, infection control, specimen collection, medication administration, immunizations) and participate in ongoing training and skill development.

  • Maintain exam room readiness; stock, clean, and prepare examination rooms daily and as needed; disinfect and maintain medical areas according to OSHA and infection control standards.

  • Assist with inventory and replenishment of supplies; report deficiencies and equipment need; Support proper use, care, and control of clinic resources. Identify expired supplies and medications and report findings to the nurse manager.

  • Participate in staff meetings, in-service programs, team huddles and support orientation/training of new staff as assigned.

  • Maintain respect for patients’ rights as prescribed by the Patient Bill of Rights and maintain confidentiality of all student interactions and records.

Qualifications

  • Graduate of an approved practical nursing program.

  • Current New York State LPN license in good standing required.

  • Prior clinical experience in ambulatory care, primary care, urgent care, public health, or student health strongly preferred.

  • Current CPR certification (or ability to obtain within a defined timeframe).

  • Ability to respond to urgent situations and appropriately use emergency equipment per training and clinic protocols.

  • Knowledge of and ability to follow infection prevention and control practices in day-to-day operations.

  • Strong written and verbal communication skills; detail-oriented, well organized; ability to prioritize tasks and collaborate effectively with clinicians and administrative staff in a fast-paced outpatient setting.

  • Ability to provide student-centered support and communicate effectively with a college-aged population, including an understanding of confidentiality, developmental needs, and common health concerns in a higher education setting.
