Locates Maintenance Technician I (86153)
Join our team as our Locates Maintenance Technician and play a vital role in protecting and maintaining the community’s underground utility infrastructure. In this hands-on position, you’ll use advanced locating equipment, utility maps, engineering plans, and aerial imagery to accurately identify and mark buried fiber, water, sewer, reclaimed water, and stormwater assets.
This position is primarily working for the Utilities Vulnerability team within Utilities, however cross-training and other duties may be assigned.

Duties and Responsibilities (Advanced, additional duties will exist for the Level II and Level III positions):
Essential
- Identifying and marking buried fiber, water, sewer, reuse and storm water infrastructures by referencing utility prints and using specialized locating equipment.
- Operates and maintains specialized equipment and tools used to locate underground utilities.
- Reads, understands, and interprets utility maps, engineering design plans, prints, and aerial imagery to assist in identification of Town owned underground utility assets.
- Prioritizes work activities by reviewing all locate requests to determine travel routes and timelines. Conducts field meetings with contractors or customers and other representatives from outside agencies and identifies the location of each utility line.
- Operates handheld detection equipment in the designed manner. Marks the location of underground utility assets on roadways, private property, and other ground surface locations, as appropriate and needed, using required spray paints, flags, or other marking devices.
- Maintains and updates records and construction drawings to mark utility lines within accuracy requirements of State laws.
- Conducts field meetings with contractors or customers and other representatives from outside agencies and identifies the location of each utility line.
- Responsible for managing, inspecting, and maintaining permanent marking posts for all Town owned underground utilities located outside of roadways.
- Operates a computer, including a tablet, and a portable or handheld GPS unit.
- Ensures that problems are corrected in a timely and effective manner.
- Must be flexible to work in all types of terrain and weather conditions, able to succeed under stressful situations and conduct him or herself in a professional manner at all times.
- Performs snow removal activities either by hand, small equipment or heavy equipment as assigned.
Administrative and Customer Service
- Completes all proper documentation for each utility locate ticket. Actively keeps current with new utility locating equipment, GIS and mapping systems, and GPS locating technology.
- Updates staff of any discrepancies found in the field during utility locates in reference to updating the Town of Erie Utility GIS mapping.
- Performs data entry of information, maintenance logs and other data in spreadsheets and related software.
- Responds to customers and contractors inquiries and complaints.
- Prepares necessary records and reports.
Safety
- Performs a variety of duties that requires considerable knowledge of the use and wear of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).
- Performs routine safety checks of equipment and minor maintenance activities on vehicles and equipment and maintains records of activities.
- Maintains a safe working environment to include working in traffic and congested areas, working in ditches and confined spaces and all work environments.
- Assists in the cleaning and organization of shop area.
Operations & Maintenance Support
- Assisting Meters with reading and maintenance, service orders, conducting turn-offs and turn-ons of residential and commercial water services.
- Assisting Streets with maintenance of roadways and signage.
- Assisting Distribution, Collections, Storm Operations tasks to include maintenance and inspection of sanitary sewer, manhole, lift stations, CCTV, water, sewer and storm lines, hydrants, valve, and PRVs.
- Assisting in Town events preparation, operation and break down.
