Position Description
The Barrick Africa & Middle East Team are seeking to recruit a Logistics Manager - AME. This role reports to the Supply Operations Manager AME.
This role will govern the complete logistics function for Africa and Middle East’s primary logistics gateway, consolidating goods from South African and global suppliers for onward shipment to all AME mine sites across five countries. Under the Control Tower model, Barrick now manages this directly with Multilog as the outsourced physical transit warehouse operator, meaning Barrick must have its own logistics management competence to govern Multilog's performance, manage freight and customs across complex corridors, and ensure supply continuity to sites.
The Logistics Manager is the key interface with Multilog and all freight service providers. This role governs all outbound logistics from South Africa and all other international freight booking, consolidation, customs, documentation, and last-mile delivery to site, across corridors including DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, Mali, and Saudi Arabia.
Duties & Responsibilities
- Manage day-to-day logistics operations, consolidated freight, transit warehouse management, international shipment management, and documentation.
- Govern the outsourced transit warehouse operational performance against agreed SLAs, despatch accuracy, warehouse handling times, documentation quality, and damage rates.
- Manage freight carrier and customs broker relationships, booking freight, negotiating rates, and ensuring service quality on all AME corridors.
- Oversee customs and import/export compliance for all outbound shipments, ensuring correct documentation, HS codes, and regulatory compliance per destination country.
- Manage the 4x Logistics Coordinators, allocating workload by corridor and ensuring all shipments are tracked from despatch to site receipt.
- Manage CLT and SWALA/SEZ logistics interfaces during transition period.
- Maintain a live shipment tracker in the Control Tower, with ETA visibility for all active shipments to all sites.
- Manage geopolitical risk on high-risk corridors (DRC, Mali), alternative routing, contingency planning.
- Manage the different transit hubs to ensure best economical routing.
- Quality control for all deliveries to the consolidation/transit hubs.
- Timely updates into logistics model to enable live visibility and tracking.
- Setup track and trace for Africa and Middle East.
Qualification Requirements
- Degree in Logistics, Supply Chain, or related field.
Experience and Skills Requirements
- 8+ years’ experience in freight forwarding, logistics operations, or supply chain management.
• Deep knowledge of sub-Saharan African logistics corridors, DRC, Zambia, Tanzania, Mali, SADC region. - Experience managing outsourced logistics providers (3PL/4PL governance).
- Strong customs and import/export documentation knowledge across multiple African jurisdictions.
- Sound knowledge of international freight, import/export documentation, HS codes, customs clearance, Incoterms, and regulatory requirements across multiple jurisdictions.
- Ability to manage outsourced warehouse, freight, and customs broker performance against SLAs, KPIs, cost targets, and service quality expectations.
- Strong capability in live shipment tracking, ETA management, exception reporting, and logistics dashboard/data accuracy.
- Cost and commercial management: Ability to negotiate freight rates, manage logistics costs against budget, identify cost-saving opportunities, and optimise routing decisions.
- Skilled in identifying geopolitical, customs, border, and supply continuity risks, with the ability to develop alternative routing and mitigation plans.
- Ability to lead a team.
- Strong communication and relationship management skills with mine sites, suppliers, freight forwarders, customs brokers, warehouse operators, and internal supply chain teams.
- Able to analyse shipment delays, service failures, cost variances, and operational bottlenecks, and implement practical corrective actions.
- High level of accuracy in documentation, shipment data, compliance checks, delivery records, and performance reporting.
- Ability to standardise logistics processes, improve tracking visibility, streamline handovers, and strengthen overall Control Tower performance.
- Comfortable managing urgent freight issues, border delays, customs escalations, and operational disruptions in a fast-paced mining environment.
