Location: Ideally, this role will work onsite at our office located in Bothell, WA or College Park, MD. We are open to hybrid and remote options for the right candidate.

The Role:
We are seeking a highly skilled, motivated, and hands-on Network Operations Manager to oversee, scale, and maintain our global corporate network infrastructure. In this role, you will bridge the gap between strategic infrastructure design and day-to-day operational excellence. You will manage the regular maintenance, uptime, and troubleshooting of our enterprise network while leading critical scale initiatives, including modernizing our identity-driven security, securing our proprietary quantum assets, and executing seamless M&A network integration roadmaps for newly acquired subsidiaries.
Responsibilities:
Global Network Operations & Lifecycle Management
- Infrastructure Reliability: Oversee the implementation, monitoring, maintenance, and support of IonQ’s global LAN, WAN, Wireless, and VPN infrastructure to ensure maximum availability, security, reliability, and performance.
- Device & Vendor Management: Configure, manage, and lifecycle network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls, load balancers, wireless controllers) from major vendors (e.g., Arista, Fortinet, Juniper, Palo Alto). Manage relationships, procurement, and work reviews with hardware and software vendors.
- Support Escalations & Documentation: Participate in an on-call rotation for critical network issues and guide the team in resolving Escalated Tier 1/2 helpdesk issues. Maintain immaculate, up-to-date network diagrams, configurations, and procedural documentation.
- Establish and manage a robust on-call rotation schedule to ensure 24/7 coverage for critical network issues.
- Establish and maintain robust documentation ensuring high-quality support for our customer base.
- Standardize the capture of root-cause solutions, translating resolved issues into accessible, global knowledge-base articles for cross-functional teams.
- Provide expert administration and governance for the corporate IT network ecosystem, while actively mentoring and upskilling junior administrators, Help Desk staff, and extended contractor teams.
M&A Integration & Site Deployment
- Subsidiary Retrofits: Lead the operational roadmap for integrating diverse, newly acquired subsidiaries into a unified IonQ infrastructure.
- Design and execute a repeatable, templated site deployment blueprint to guarantee 100% network, identity, and hardware readiness in lockstep with business timelines.
- Site Expansion: Stage and deploy network infrastructure for office buildouts, expansions, and maintenance, requiring occasional travel to other domestic or international IonQ locations.
Security, Compliance & Identity Architecture
- Zero Trust & IAM Alignment: Actively participate in the rollout of Zero Trust architecture and network segmentation. Collaborate with internal systems teams to align network access with modern Identity and Access Management (IAM), cloud directory platforms (e.g., JumpCloud/Okta), managed-device strategies (MDM), and Conditional Access Policies.
- Compliance Standards: Ensure all corporate network infrastructures and subsidiary integrations strictly adhere to CMMC and SOC2 Type II compliance frameworks and industry best practices when necessary.
- Federal & Defense Compliance: Segregate and maintain network boundaries that meet strict federal standards for safeguarding CUI (Controlled Unclassified Information) and adhering to ITAR (International Traffic in Arms Regulations) export controls.
- Framework Enforcement: Maintain and audit network configurations to ensure continuous compliance with CMMC (Cybersecurity Maturity Model Certification) and NIST SP 800-171 frameworks across all corporate environments and newly acquired subsidiaries.
- Quantum Asset Protection: Maintain and evolve the rigid security perimeter around our core quantum computing resources, ensuring tightly managed access via secure VPNs and IP-restricted gateways.
Requirements:
- Experience: 7-10 years of experience in network engineering and administration, with at least 3-5 years in leadership, project management, or operations management capacity handling multi-site or complex corporate environments.
- Education: Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, or a related field, or equivalent practical work experience.
- Routing & Switching Fundamentals: Deep understanding of core networking protocols and technologies, including TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VLANs, and routing protocols (OSPF, BGP).
- Security & Firewall Expertise: Strong hands-on experience configuring and managing enterprise firewalls (e.g., Fortinet, Palo Alto Networks), secure VPN tunneling, and access control lists.
- Compliance Frameworks: Practical experience building, auditing, or maintaining networks within highly regulated frameworks such as SOC2 Type II or CMMC.
- Modern Identity Access: Familiarity navigating migrations from traditional On-Prem Active Directory domains to modern, identity-driven cloud directories (e.g., JumpCloud, Okta) and Conditional Access Policies.
- Communication & Collaboration: Exceptional interpersonal skills with a proven track record of collaborating effectively with subsidiary IT leads, internal stakeholders, and external vendors during stressful infrastructure transitions.
- Availability: Ability to participate in an after-hours on-call rotation and travel occasionally to other IonQ manufacturing or office sites.
Preferred Qualifications:
- Relevant advanced industry certifications (e.g., CCNP, PCNSE, NSE 4–7).
- Experience working in high-security, high-tech industries (e.g., Aerospace, Defense, or Deep Tech).
- Experience with cloud-native networking environments (e.g., Google Cloud Platform, AWS).
- Knowledge of network automation tools and scripting languages (e.g., Python, Ansible) to drive operational efficiency.
The approximate base salary range for this position is $126,887 - $166,127. The total compensation package includes base, bonus, equity, and a range of benefit options found on our career site.
Compensation will vary based on individual factors such as education, qualifications, and experience of the final candidate(s), specific office location, and calibration against relevant market data and internal team equity. Posted base salary figures are subject to change as new market data becomes available.
