Position Overview:

The Tools & Outdoor (T&O) division of SBD is currently seeking an Industrial Designer Manager. This position will report to the Senior Director of the Taiwan Design Center (TDC) and the Hand Tools & Storage (HTAS) Portfolio Design Manager, as part of the larger global Product Execution team. This position will support end user insights, innovation, industrial design, surfacing, digital visualization and prototyping activities for several key Brand franchises. These include DEWALT, Stanley, Black + Decker, Craftsman, Mac Tools, Irwin & Lenox.

Who We’re Looking For:

We are seeking a hands-on Industrial Design Manager who will function as a player/coach that participates and leads teams to visualize new product design directions, work cross-functionally with adjacent teams, and execute production-ready design solutions. This experienced candidate will lead daily design-related activities and teams for multiple projects, with accuracy and accountability. As an Industrial Design Manager, you will be responsible for working directly with the HTAS Portfolio Manager, TDC Senior Director, and team of Industrial Designers and Industrial Design Surfacers.

  • Effectively leads, mentors, develops and assesses team members.
  • Partners with senior leaders to develop career planning for team members.

Processes

  • Manages all day-to-day design tasks of team members assigned to projects.
  • Utilizes project management platform to track and report to Design Leadership on design activities.
  • Sets work priorities and assigns projects in close collaboration with senior design leadership.
  • Ensures that projects and business objectives are met according to the agreed time and requirements.
  • Relentlessly looks for opportunities to improve the team’s efficiency and effectiveness.

Strategic Communication

  • Communicates clearly and with integrity. Strong English fluency required.
  • Maintains effective channels of communication with all project team members.
  • Collaborates with other members of the Global ID team.
  • Collaborates with function peers and partners in the matrix organization including engineering, packaging, program development and brand.
  • Cultivates and owns strong relationships with BU cross functional peers.

Design Direction

  • Aligns with and supports the Global Industrial Design Team’s vision and design direction.
  • Drives execution and alignment with other functions.
  • Ensures that design work follows the relevant VDL and guidelines for each Brand.
  • Player/Coach on the team that deep dives as needed to support design efforts.
  • Communicates design intent through highly resolved 2D and 3D drawings, 3D models, project documentation and presentation.
  • Collaborates with other design leaders across the Global ID Team to raise the bar for design and align on best practices.
  • Set standards for the team’s design excellence promoting a Design Thinking approach and a user centered mentality to deliver world-class, holistic product experiences.
  • Relentlessly pursues High Design quality.
  • Evaluates technical alternatives, pushes boundaries, and facilitates implementation of the best solution.
  • Looks beyond the scope of the current project in setting the design direction.
  • Guides team to user insights and competitive intelligence to identify opportunities to drive product experience innovation.

Qualifications & Skills

  • BS, BA or equivalent in Industrial Design
  • 10+ years design experience required
  • Experience with hand tool and portable storage categories desirable.
  • Proficiency with common design tools (Photoshop, Illustrator, Keyshot, Wacom tablet, etc.)
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD solid and surfacing modeling, CATIA experience highly desirable.
  • Ability to quickly conceptualize and communicate ideas with exceptional sketching and visualizing skills.
  • A strong understanding of design principles and a sense for brand aesthetics.
  • Strong understanding of product materials, ergonomics, manufacturing processes, design for manufacturing, and value analysis.
  • Thorough understanding of mechanical components, complex systems, and assemblies.
  • Exceptional communication & collaboration abilities with other disciplines.
  • Experience managing creative output from outside agencies, suppliers, and vendors.
  • Capable of multi-tasking and managing multiple priorities and teams.
  • Strong project and time management skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership of programs of increasing technical and commercial complexity.
  • Ability to appreciate, interpret, discuss and resolve complex product related issues.
  • Solid communications and interpersonal skills to influence the organization and form strong relationships.
  • Developing skills, motivating and empowering team members to obtain maximum productivity.
