Manager of Recreation & Fitness
Job Description Summary
Under the direction of the Executive Director, Wellness Center Services & Events, the Manager of Recreation & Fitness is responsible for supervising the recreation department, including intramurals, and club sports. This position also oversees the day-to-day operation of the Wellness Center, including the front desk, fitness center, and gymnasium, while developing, implementing, and managing recreation and fitness programming that enhances student and community engagement.Job Description
- Develops quality group exercise and intramural programming that meet the evolving needs of students and members.
- Ensures adequate programming to support community member participation. Implements and manages the Wellness Center membership program, resolving issues and maintaining adherence to policies.
- Researches industry best practices and adapts policies, procedures, and programs accordingly.
- Develops and implements a student work-study training program, providing ongoing education as needed.
- Plans and delivers quarterly wellness seminars for students and community members.
- Processes space requests for gymnasium and studios from internal clients.
- Coordinates scheduling and logistics for internal events hosted in the Wellness Center.
- Manages, inventories, and procures fitness, recreation, and intramural equipment.
- Develops, implements, and oversees maintenance and cleaning schedules for the fitness center, gymnasium, and front desk.
- Works with departments housed in the Wellness Center to ensure facility cleanliness and upkeep.
- Develops, manages, and monitors the recreation program budget.
- Promotes awareness of fitness and recreation policies.
- Collaborates with campus departments to enhance student participation in fitness and recreation programs.
- Develops and executes an internal marketing plan for Wellness Center and recreation programs.
- Supervises the daily operations of the Wellness Center, serving as the manager on duty during mornings, nights, and weekends.
- Supervises graduate assistants for fitness, recreation, and intramurals.
- Hires, trains, and manages student employees assigned to the front desk, fitness center, and event setup to ensure high-quality customer service.
- Provides support for aquatics and special events as necessary.
- Covers and supervises events as needed.
- Performs additional duties as assigned.
QUALIFICATIONS
- Education: Bachelor’s degree from a regionally accredited college or university required.
- Master’s degree preferred in recreation, physical education, wellness, or a related field.
- Membership and involvement in the national intramural & recreational sports association (NIRSA) preferred. Knowledge & Skills:

- Program planning and development expertise.
- Strong organizational, implementation, and follow-up skills.
- CPR/AED/First aid certification required (or ability to obtain within three months of hire).
- Proficiency in Microsoft Office and social media platforms.
Abilities:
- Ability to collaborate with other departments to facilitate special events.
- Comfortable speaking and presenting at campus events, admissions functions, involvement fairs, and other activities.
- Ability to work evenings and weekends as needed. This position is essential to fostering student well-being, engagement, and retention through innovative and inclusive recreation and fitness programming.
