Manufacturing Operation Manager

Consults with leadership team to set short- to medium-term strategic direction and operating plans for a typically small to medium sized manufacturing operation. Ensures products are manufactured on schedule, and within quality standards and cost objectives. Implements manufacturing standards and defines guidelines for assigned area(s). Determines directions, priorities and assigns resources with full accountability for results of functional area. Responsible for establishing and managing budgets.

• Initiates and approves projects to continuously improve efficiency and competitiveness.
• May have direct responsibility or work with functional leader for functional strategic planning, including establishing and managing budgets for one or more departments in the immediate organization.
• Management responsibility usually encompasses one work group/department within a functional discipline, such as production, quality, engineering, materials control, warehousing, maintenance, health/safety/environment, etc.
• Determines priorities, timetables and assigns resources/tasks. Accountable for the activities and results of their functional area.
• Typically, provides direct supervision to professional and support levels which include objective setting, performance management, and motivating, as well as training and coaching.
• Problem solving requires hypothetical thinking to determine best solutions for complex problems. Utilizes resources across work areas and departments to create solutions. Most complex problem solving may require in-depth interpretation and analysis for significantly different situations.
• Has a moderate impact typically on a small to medium, established business.
• Decisions impact one area of the organization and occasionally may impact multiple areas.
• Has responsibility for establishing and enforcing multiple concepts relative to the function.
• Working tasks might include:
• a. Implements manufacturing plans and standards for a small to medium sized manufacturing operation
• b. Coaches and explains manufacturing data and methodologies to functional leaders and outside suppliers/manufacturers to ensure their understanding and buy-in
• Directs the production at lowest cost consistent with established specifications
• Coordinates operating activities so that approved products are manufactured on schedule and within quality standards and cost objectives
• Ensures maximum efficiency and productivity of production facility through just-in-time concepts and/or other cost reduction methodologies Assures compliance with corporate and local governmental safety, health and environmental rules, policies, and procedures.
• Incumbent typically communicates with managers, functional leaders, area/business leaders, department heads, and direct subordinates. May interact with external clients.

• Asia-based or regionally co-located with supplier to eliminate time zone barriers + on site travel will be required (20% minimum over next 6 months)

• Negotiates and counsels on an expert level, justifies controversial positions and demonstrates intermediate persuasion skills.
• Actively participates in relevant corporate programs/initiatives, complies with professional and quality standards, complies with corporate policies and procedures, and acts in a manner consistent with 3M’s values and ethical standards.
• Ability to hold supplier accountable to deliverables and timeline
• Supports supplier qualification (along w/ other 3M technical teams) Where assets are required, coordinates installation of scale up of assets at supplier(s) – some NPIs include more than one 3PM supplier
• Leads scale-up, ensures successful FAI and completion of validation plan by Quality/Lab
• Responds to immediate capacity growth needs (staffing/shift adds, yield improvements etc)
• Coordinate actions and 3M specs to supplier w/clear communication transfer on 3M process, quality, lab, etc
• Setup security controls according to IP boundary conditions approved by lab and legal
• Ability to replicate to additional new SOS in future at same supplier in second location
