Marine Underwriter
Key Responsibilities
Portfolio Management & Growth
- Own and manage the profitability, growth, and sustainability of the Marine & Specialty portfolio.
- Develop and execute portfolio strategies aligned with company objectives.
- Monitor portfolio performance through key underwriting and financial metrics.
- Identify growth opportunities within existing and emerging market segments.
- Maintain underwriting discipline while achieving sustainable growth targets.
- Regularly review pricing adequacy, risk appetite, and portfolio composition.
Technical Underwriting Leadership
- Evaluate and underwrite complex Marine & Specialty risks within delegated authority.
- Provide technical guidance on coverage, policy wording, risk assessment, pricing, and structuring.
- Support large or complex submissions requiring advanced underwriting expertise.
- Work closely with reinsurance partners where required.
Broker & Client Relationship Management
- Build and maintain strong relationships with brokers, agents, and key clients.
- Act as a trusted advisor on Marine & Specialty insurance solutions.
- Support business development initiatives through broker visits, presentations, and market engagement.
- Represent the company in industry events and market discussions.
Product & Business Development
- Identify market trends and customer needs to support product enhancement and innovation.
- Collaborate with product, operations, claims, and distribution teams to improve customer propositions.
- Support the development of new products, schemes, and niche specialty opportunities.
Leadership & Talent Development
- Mentor and develop junior underwriters and underwriting support staff.
- Promote underwriting excellence and knowledge sharing within the team.
- Foster a culture of accountability, collaboration, and continuous improvement.
Governance & Compliance
- Ensure compliance with regulatory requirements, underwriting guidelines, and internal controls.
- Maintain strong underwriting governance and documentation standards.
- Support audits, compliance reviews, and internal reporting requirements.
Essential
- Minimum 8–10 years of Marine and/or Specialty underwriting experience.
- Proven experience managing a portfolio with accountability for growth and profitability.
- Strong understanding of Marine Cargo, Marine Liability, Freight Liability, Hull, Yacht, and Specialty insurance products.
- Demonstrated experience dealing with brokers and commercial clients.
- Strong analytical, negotiation, and decision-making skills.
- Excellent communication and stakeholder management capabilities.
Preferred
- Previous leadership, mentoring, or team management experience.
- Experience within multinational insurance companies.
- Professional insurance qualification (AMII, ACII, or equivalent).
- Experience in product development, portfolio management, or strategic planning.
