This position is assigned to the Carpentry shop within the Maintenance Section of Facilities Engineering Service at the Sioux Falls VA Healthcare System (SFVAHCS). The employee performs the necessary Masonry and Carpentry duties for remodeling or repair throughout the SFVAHCS. They work from blueprints, rough sketches, or written work orders to perform installation, maintenance, alteration, and construction associated with the masonry and carpentry trades. Major duties include but are not limited to: Brickwork and associated tuck pointing; Interior expansion joint replacement; Construction of steel reinforced support pads for building equipment; Removal of shower/tub enclosures and converting shower stalls; General ceramic work for wet areas; Create window and doorway openings in concrete masonry unit walls; Construct and repair retaining walls; Shape and repair sandstone capstone and ridge; Repair existing manholes and catch basins, adjusting for proper height and slope to drain; Frame, place, and finish concrete as well as drills, cuts, chips, and cores, concrete to make necessary repairs to floors, ceilings, sidewalks, walls, curb and gutter, and parking lots; Repair and construct walls of various materials; Install metal shelving, cabinets, and pallet racking; Construct, install, repair, and modify wood and wood substitute structures and items requiring close tolerance fit, structural stability, and weathertight assemblies.
