POSITION: MECHANIC

REPORTS TO: PUBLIC WORKS SUPERINTENDENT & CHIEF MECHANIC

FLSA STATUS: NON-EXEMPT (Eligible for overtime pay)


NATURE OF WORK

Performs specialized skilled journey-level mechanical and technical work in the maintenance of automobiles, light-duty pickups, heavy trucks, earth moving, and related construction equipment, gasoline and diesel-powered tractors, and dump trucks.


ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Maintains gasoline and diesel engines, transmissions, hydraulic systems, air conditioning, electrical, and other automotive systems in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and requirements and departmental procedures.
  • Perform welding, occasional fabrication of parts, and other duties relating to the upkeep of equipment.
  • Inspects, repairs and overhauls brakes, ignition systems, transmission, differentials, axle assemblies; repairs and installs hydraulic controls; tunes motors using standard testing equipment.
  • Takes down, repairs, and reassembles air compressors, pumps, and related equipment.
  • Provides roadside assistance and emergency repairs outside of garage.
  • Performs road tests and operational checks of vehicles and equipment before and after repairs, modifications, and service.
  • Ensures proper preventive maintenance service is performed in accordance with manufacturers' recommendations and requirements.
  • Creates and completes work orders. Enters notes and comments. Requests parts as required.
  • Maintains regular and punctual attendance.

OTHER JOB DUTIES

  • May deliver motor vehicles to dealerships/vendors for specialized maintenance and warranty repairs.
  • Ensures tools, equipment and garage area are clean and orderly maintained.
  • May shape, design, and weld equipment and materials on occasion.
  • Attends training seminars as needed.
  • Performs all other work assigned.

REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of the advanced techniques and methods used in the repair and maintenance of motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of the tools and equipment used in the servicing of motor vehicles and heavy construction equipment.
  • Knowledge of the basic theory, operation, and maintenance of internal combustion engines, transmissions, carburetors, fuel injection and other automotive systems.
  • Thorough knowledge of occupational hazards and safety precautions of vehicle maintenance and repair.
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other technology software/tools used in fleet management.
  • Ability to diagnose and correct automobile and equipment problems/issues.
  • Ability to effectively use and operate hand and pneumatic tools, brake lathe, and related repair tools.
  • Ability to install, maintain, operate, and analyze data received from diagnostic equipment and tools.
  • Adapt available tools and repair parts to specific repair problems.
  • Ability to complete accurate work orders and parts requests.
  • Ability to communicate, establish and maintain effective working relationships.


REQUIRED EDUCATION, TRAINING AND EXPERIENCE

  • High school diploma or G.E.D.
  • Three years’ experience in automotive mechanics and heavy equipment, both gasoline and Diesel.
  • Class 7 Pa state inspection license and Class A CDL operator license and maintain the license throughout employment. (Six months may be provided from date of hire for successful applicant to obtain Class 7 PA Inspection License and CDL license).
  • Work experience with municipal and utilities fleet vehicles and equipment, including public safety (police and fire) preferred.
  • Welding & fabrication experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of hybrid and electric vehicles a plus.


ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Use of hands for fine manipulation and grasping, including use of hand tools and precision instruments.
  • May occasionally lift objects up to 100 pounds.
  • May occasionally crawl, stand, walk, sit, listen, talk, use hands, drive, bend, climb, squat, push/pull while seated or standing, and reach above shoulder level.
  • The work environment involves moderate risks or discomforts associated with vehicle/equipment maintenance. These include working in extreme temperatures, working around potentially dangerous equipment, moving parts, carts or machines, working around grease and oil, and so forth.
  • May be exposed to a variety of irritant chemicals, lubricants, and exhaust fumes.
  • May be required to use protective clothing or gear as necessary to minimize risks of personal injury.
  • May require performance of tasks outdoors under varying climatic conditions.
