Job Description

Motorola Solutions is looking for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join the Silent Sentinel team, in order to facilitate the development of ongoing projects.

The successful candidate will be self-motivated and can have autonomy in their work with the confidence to reach out when support is required. This person will collaborate with various stakeholders within and external to the engineering department, as they work to produce reliable products and production methods.

The role of this person is primarily to design enclosures and mechanisms, fit for harsh environments, including (but not limited to) -40°C, marine conditions, and MIL STD. Designs will be produced on CAD (Solidworks) and be translated to both technical drawings, and build guides. These must be legible to all who will read them in the production, quality and manufacturing sectors.

Finally, the successful candidate will have a great attention to detail as they will be inspecting drawings before they are released for manufacture. This attention to detail will be critical when testing prototypes or when assisting production with troubleshooting.

Anyone successful enough to be invited for an interview must be able to demonstrate a basic portfolio with relevant work.


Basic Requirements

The basic requirements of the successful candidate include:

  • Fluency in English (spoken and written)
  • CAD experience in Solidworks (3D modelling, 2D technical drawings, BoM production)
  • Knowledge of material properties, manufacturing techniques, plating methods, coatings and fasteners
  • Ability to travel between Ware (main office) and Sandy (machine shop) on short notice.
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills, including the ability to produce clear, concise documentation
  • Self-motivated with the ability to learn quickly and independently while also work within a team
  • A demonstrated pragmatic approach to problem solving
  • Ability to design for manufacture and assembly
  • Ability to implement designs that are ergonomic and aesthetically pleasing would be an asset
  • Familiarity with IP ratings and methods of achieving IP67
  • Being able to design and carry out relevant tests to help achieve high product quality
  • Ability to justify design decisions with calculations, analysis and written documentation.
  • Experience in FEA and thermal simulation would be advantageous.
