The Opportunity
Our Aurora Central team is seeking a multiskilled, team-oriented Mechanical Technician who is proficient in troubleshooting, maintaining, and operating natural gas generator engines and related auxiliary equipment. The successful candidate may reside or relocate to Athabasca, AB, and report primarily to the Athabasca office along with our remote stations located across Northern Alberta.
The regular work schedule for this position will be:
- Week 1 – Monday to Thursday 9 hours per day; 8 hours on Friday
- Week 2 – Monday to Thursday 9 hours per day; Friday off
What You'll Do:
- Operate and troubleshoot primary and standby generator engines, centrifugal and diaphragm pumps, oil coolers, air compressors, large bank cooler fans and gear boxes, large diameter valves and operators, and other auxiliary equipment
- Plan, coordinate and perform mechanical maintenance activities, to include routine corrective maintenance, preventive maintenance, equipment and system improvements and major maintenance projects
- Complete work orders daily, enter data into job plans, create new work orders
- Manage contractors and vendors while on-site
- Assist in planning work and participate in safety and/or team meetings and discussions
- Other tasks as required
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Waukesha Engine or CAT Service Technician certified
Preferred Qualifications:
- Journeyperson with one of the following: Heavy Duty Mechanic or Millwright
- Experience in maintaining and optimizing engines while identifying performance trends and historical data
- Proven expertise in advanced mechanical diagnostics, top-end/major overhauls, and tuning of rich-burn and lean-burn Waukesha industrial engines, including ESM control.
- Extensive hands-on experience of mid-horsepower Caterpillar 3400 and 3500 series power systems, including complex failure analysis, full engine rebuilds, and the expert utilization of CAT Electronic Technician
- Relevant energy industry experience
- Ability to interpret technical reference documents
- Ability to work self-guided with minimal supervision
- Thorough understanding of stop work authority (SWA) and safe work practices
- Knowledge and understanding of lock out/tag out (LOTO) procedures
- Experience in the use of Microsoft Suite
- Ability to understand piping drawings
- Basic knowledge of instrumentation and electrical troubleshooting
This position requires candidates to:
- Have and maintain a valid driver’s license and a safe driving record
- Work away from home in hotels or company provided camp facilities 60-70% of the work schedule
- Successfully complete a pre-employment medical screening, including drug and alcohol testing
- Be subject to call out on a rotational schedule and work extended days and/or weeks for emergency response purposes
- Travel to other company locations for temporary assignments, meetings or training which would involve some overnight stays away from home
- Be subject to working conditions which include adverse weather, heavy lifting and temperatures and cramped conditions
