Education
- Graduate from an accredited program for medical assistants with one year in a medical office setting preferred.
- If not a graduate from a medical assisting program, then three years' experience in a medical office setting is required.
Experience / Qualifications
- BLS certification through the American Heart Association for Healthcare Providers.
- Medical Assistance Certification preferred.
- Knowledge of the outpatient practice of medicine.
- Must have experience in medical assisting.
- Knowledge of medical practice, patient care skills, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- Must possess computer skills and customer service skills.
- Capable of making sound decisions.
- Detail oriented and self-motivated.
Position Summary
The Medical Assistant is a multi-skilled specialist who assists the physician, ARNP and clinical care team in all aspects of the medical practice under the direct responsibility of the physician. The medical assistant assists providers and RNs with patient care management, executes administrative and clinical procedures and performs supervisory functions pertaining to position. Competency requires that the medical assistant adheres to ethical and legal standards of professional practice, recognize and respond to emergencies and demonstrates professional characteristics.
- Knowledge of medical practice, patient care skills, examination, diagnostic and treatment room procedures.
- Knowledge of medical equipment and instruments to administer patient care.
- Knowledge of common safety hazards and precautions to establish a safe work environment.
- EMR experience preferred.
- Must possess computer skills and customer service skills.
- Demonstrates clinical competency.

- Welcome patients by greeting them in person or on the telephone.
- Perform preliminary physical tests, take blood pressure, weight, temperature, and record accurately.
- Prepare patients for the health care visit by directing and accompanying them to the exam room – stay with patients for telehealth visits.
- Update patient documentation sheet after examinations are completed.
- Call various offices for updated patient records, research patient history within hospital EMR.
- Clean and prepare exam rooms prior to patient appointments.
- Schedule imaging/testing, making arrangements and verifying times with patients.
- Counsel patients by transmitting physician’s orders and questions about imaging.
- Educate patients by providing PET diet information and instructions, answer questions.
- Keep supplies ready by inventorying stock (exam rooms/supplies).
- Answer calls directly incoming from patients.
- Process patient messages and return calls to patients with answers to any questions/requests per nurses and all providers.
- Accept new and different request and opportunities to add to job accomplishments (front desk, lobby coverage, etc.)
- Complete records by recording patient examination, treatment, and test results.
- Complete insurance/FMLA forms.
- Assist with transportation of patients from the AFCI to the hospital for diagnostic testing and/or simulation.
- Assist and take direction from RNs and all providers.
- Assist with on treat visits and present to all providers.
- Prepares, request and faxes materials for multidisciplinary conference presentations for MDs.
- Update task pad weekly.
- Prepare discharge instructions for each day ahead of time.
- Schedule other procedures as required. (IOeRT, SpaceOARS, etc.)
- Order supplies.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
