Our Microbiology department is seeking a dedicated and motivated Medical Laboratory Scientist to join our team in a permanent, part-time position of 30 hours per fortnight. This is an excellent opportunity to contribute to a vital and fast-paced area of our laboratory services.
The role is based on a fixed roster of 15 hours per week worked as 4 hours on Thursday, 5 hours on Friday, and 6 hours on Saturday. Saturday availability is essential.
We’re looking for someone who is eager to learn new skills, works effectively both independently and as part of a team, and takes pride in delivering high-quality, accurate results. You’ll be organised, detail-oriented, and approachable, with a strong commitment to excellence in both scientific standards and customer service.
The ideal candidate will demonstrate initiative, precision, and the ability to work confidently with minimal supervision.
Key Responsibilities
- Perform routine and specialised microbiological testing on clinical specimens.
- Apply established techniques to identify and characterise microorganisms.
- Review and report laboratory results in line with quality and reporting standards.
- Participate in quality control, quality assurance, and compliance processes.
- Assist with troubleshooting technical and analytical issues.
- Support continuous improvement of laboratory workflows and processes.
- Work collaboratively with the laboratory and wider clinical teams.
- Maintain accurate documentation in accordance with accreditation requirements.

To be successful in this role you need to have:
- The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
- A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- Excellent attention to detail, with good record-keeping skills.
- The ability to work independently and able to participate in out-of-hour shifts as per the roster provided.
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Scientist is essential.
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
If you do not yet have your registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand, we will also consider candidates who are in the process of becoming qualified.
