Medical Laboratory Technician

Job Summary
The Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) performs a variety of clinical laboratory tests and procedures to assist in the diagnosis, treatment, and prevention of disease. Working under the supervision of the Laboratory Clinical Director and Assistant Supervisor, the MLT is responsible for specimen collection, testing, quality control, equipment maintenance, and accurate reporting of results. This position plays a vital role in supporting patient care by ensuring reliable laboratory services while maintaining compliance with hospital policies, regulatory standards, and laboratory best practices.
Essential Functions
As a Medical Laboratory Technician, you will:
- Collect, label, process, and distribute laboratory specimens through venipuncture, finger stick, and arterial draws.
- Perform laboratory testing in blood bank, chemistry, coagulation, hematology, serology, urinalysis, parasitology, and other laboratory disciplines.
- Collect arterial blood gases as needed.
- Perform EKGs when required.
- Ensure all quality control standards and procedures are met.
- Troubleshoot testing discrepancies and equipment issues while implementing corrective actions.
- Perform routine maintenance and calibration of laboratory equipment.
- Assist with inventory management and laboratory supply monitoring.
- Orient and support new employees and assist with student clinical rotations.
- Maintain accurate documentation and laboratory records.
- Ensure compliance with hospital policies, accreditation standards, and regulatory requirements.
- Maintain a clean, organized, and safe laboratory environment.
- Participate in departmental meetings, continuing education, and on-call rotations.
- Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
- Associate Degree in Medical Laboratory Technology or equivalent from an accredited program
- Current West Virginia Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT) License
- ASCP Certification or equivalent
- Previous hospital laboratory experience
- Strong analytical and problem-solving skills
- Excellent attention to detail
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Strong organizational and communication skills
- Experience with laboratory information systems and electronic documentation
Physical Requirements
- Frequent standing, walking, sitting, bending, reaching, and use of hands for specimen collection and laboratory procedures
- Ability to lift up to 50 pounds occasionally
- Manual dexterity required for laboratory testing and specimen processing
- Visual acuity and hearing sufficient to perform laboratory duties safely and effectively
