Our Histology Department is currently searching for a dedicated, enthusiastic and competent Medical Laboratory Technician. This is a permanent, part-time position of 64 hours per fortnight, based at Hutt Hospital.
You will be willing to learn new skills and work well independently as well as part of a team. We are looking for someone who is highly organised, detail-oriented and friendly, with a strong focus on quality and customer service.
This role offers the opportunity to develop your technical skills within a supportive laboratory environment while contributing to high-quality patient outcomes. The successful applicant must have a high degree of accuracy and be self-sufficient to excel in this role.
Key Responsibilities
- Receive, process and store specimens correctly, ensuring urgent samples are prioritised.
- Organise and prioritise workload to meet turnaround times and deadlines.
- Perform laboratory procedures in accordance with established protocols.
- Operate laboratory equipment and carry out routine quality control, maintenance and equipment checks.
- Recognise and report equipment or process issues to the appropriate person.
- Use the Laboratory Information System (LIS) to generate worklists and enter data accurately.

To be successful in this role you need to have:
- Experience in immunohistochemistry is desirable but not essential
- The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
- A team focus with initiative, excellent interpersonal and communication skills, and possess the ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline-oriented environment.
- A proactive and adaptable approach to learning new processes and supporting continuous improvement within the laboratory.
- Excellent attention to detail, with good record-keeping skills.
- The ability to work independently, particularly during night-shift hours, while in a supported role.
- Registration with the Medical Sciences Council of New Zealand and a current Annual Practicing Certificate is essential.
- Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
