Medical Technician
Position serves as a Medical Technician for Phlebotomy and Specimen Receiving located in Laboratory Service at the VAMC Grand Junction. This position will be posted for a 90 day period though candidates will be reviewed and qualified candidates will be referred to the Hiring Manager for consideration on a bi-weekly basis.
Duties include but not limited to: Perform venipunctures in accordance with facility and lab policies and procedures. Verify correct patient identification and performs proper specimen handling and labeling (accurately labels all samples correctly with patient/sample identifiers). Verify lab test request are consistent with physician orders. Generates labels, sorts labeled specimens, and delivers samples to appropriate lab sections. Conduct work according to lab safety regulations. Set up equipment for all phlebotomy procedures and ensures functionality according to standards. Control contaminated or potentially dangerous specimens according to accreditation agency requirements. Accession specimens & retrieves results using CPRS and Vista computer systems. Ensure that all specimens being handled maintain their integrity and are properly and completely labeled; assures the proper request, both hardcopy and VISTA computer orders and correct specimen (i.e., type, amount, etc.) are submitted with all required information. Make distribution of reports to physician and medical records when automation is unavailable. Perform clerical duties related to handling of laboratory specimens, e.g. conducting order entry and patient registration in reference lab information' systems, accessioning specimens, receiving test results from reference laboratories, entering results into the VISTA, verifying for completeness, and checking for pending test results. Contact physicians for additional needed information and/or patient history in order to insure proper testing and interpretive data is received. Sort specimens based on testing location, needs, and priority for turnaround time. Promotion Potential: Position is at Full Performance Level.
