Mill Supervisor - Night Shift

Job Summary

The Mill Supervisor is responsible for overseeing the efficient operation of the Mill and Loading department, including direct supervision of hourly employees in the preparation of salt for package and bulk resale – covering storage, screening, mixing, pressing, bagging, palletizing, and loading of trucks and railcars. The supervisor must ensure the overall facility operations during the shift, perform quality control inspections of products, packaging, and ingredients to meet regulatory standards, and act as the facility liaison to Supply Chain Partners, providing inventory verification and resolving shipping/receiving issues. Additionally, the supervisor manages warehouse tasks such as Drop-and-Hook programs and coordinate railcar shipments and deliveries.

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Maintain a safe work environment by enforcing company policies and procedures (e.g., LOTO, hot work, confined space) and promoting proactive safety practices among employees and contractors.
  • Supervise and instruct hourly employees to ensure safe, efficient operation of Mill and Loading processes.
  • Lead continuous improvement efforts by coaching, training, and developing employees; support creation and maintenance of SOPs, PJHAs, and LOTO procedures.
  • Support operations across Mill, Bagging, Supersacks, Pellet/Pretzel production, and Shipping as needed.
  • Plan and coordinate production schedules to meet output requirements; communicate shift expectations and prepare necessary documentation for handoff.
  • Ensure equipment reliability by coordinating maintenance activities and maintaining adequate repair materials.
  • Administer Collective Bargaining Agreement and plant policies.
  • Monitor operations, maintain logs, and troubleshoot equipment/process issues to improve performance and reliability.
  • Collaborate with Quality, Engineering, and other departments to ensure product quality, consistency, and operational efficiency.
  • Maintain compliance with GMP, safety, environmental, and regulatory standards; address any issues promptly.
  • Perform quality inspections and testing on raw materials, in-process, and finished products; maintain accurate documentation and support a strong quality culture.
  • Coordinate logistics and transportation activities, including scheduling, carrier communication, inventory verification, and issue resolution (e.g., dock times, delays, detention).
  • Support shipping operations, including drop-and-hook programs and railcar coordination as needed.
  • Analyze and track key performance indicators (KPIs); support continuous improvement initiatives and customer satisfaction goals.
  • Verify freight-related invoices (e.g., detention, demurrage) for accuracy.
  • Complete special projects and additional duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

  • Advanced Excel skills and knowledge of SAP.
  • Self-motivation with leadership and vision.
  • Strong analytical skills with the ability to collect, organize, analyze and disseminate significant amounts of information with attention to detail and accuracy.
  • Knowledge of key inventory and supply chain performance metrics.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to construct well-written documents that translate data into insights and provide the appropriate level of detail/information.
  • Able to prioritize and manage multiple projects simultaneously. Strong track record for execution and follow-through when managing critical deadlines.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent with 10 years of experience or bachelor’s degree in engineering with 1-3 years of experience.

Work Environment

  • Flexible schedule and overtime may be required.
  • Responds to urgent or emergency situations outside of normal working hours, as needed.
  • Works in seated or standing positions for prolonged periods of time.
  • May perform sustained manual activities at moderate levels of exertion including lifting and moving loads of up to fifty (50) pounds, climbing ladders / stairs and working on elevated platforms.
  • Works and travels throughout surface plant environment of varied temperatures and humidity.
  • Must be capable of wearing all required PPE and must be physically able to access all plant work areas.
  • Uses full range of motion.
  • Works in general office and surface manufacturing plant environment.
