Position Overview

CARIAN is seeking an experienced Overhead Construction Supervisor to support overhead utility construction activities throughout New Jersey.

This role will provide field supervision and oversight for overhead transmission and distribution construction, maintenance, and contractor work. The Overhead Construction Supervisor will coordinate daily field activities, monitor contractor performance, verify work completion, support outage and operations coordination, and help ensure work is performed safely and in accordance with utility standards, construction specifications, procedures, and applicable requirements.

The ideal candidate has strong overhead line construction experience, practical field judgment, knowledge of utility work methods, and the ability to work effectively with contractors, general foremen, operations teams, project managers, and utility stakeholders in a live field environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide field supervision and oversight for overhead transmission and distribution construction and maintenance activities.

  • Report to contractor show-up locations, project sites, and other assigned field locations throughout New Jersey.

  • Coordinate daily work activities with contractors, general foremen, operations personnel, project managers, and other field stakeholders.

  • Confirm circuit availability, outage readiness, work assignments, crew counts, rosters, and daily work plans.

  • Attend and witness morning tailboards, huddles, and job briefings.

  • Review daily work plans with general foremen and confirm alignment with safety, schedule, outage, and construction requirements.

  • Observe contractor crews to verify compliance with utility safety rules, work procedures, construction specifications, and approved work methods.

  • Monitor field progress, work quality, crew performance, safety compliance, and schedule adherence.

  • Mitigate safety issues, project concerns, field conflicts, and work execution issues as they arise.

  • Monitor and forecast material needs to support field execution.

  • Verify owner-furnished equipment and project materials are properly received, stored, tagged, used, returned, and documented.

  • Support proper handling, labeling, storage, and disposal of waste materials, including treated wood and other regulated materials.

  • Perform field inspections and document construction progress, completed units, field conditions, issues, risks, and required follow-up.

  • Review contractor invoices, completed units, and supporting documentation for accuracy.

  • Support outage requests, outage coordination, access planning, and related field documentation as needed.

  • Read and interpret one-lines, circuit maps, construction drawings, work packages, and field documentation.

  • Communicate with Division Operations, project leadership, contractors, and other stakeholders as needed.

  • Participate in weekly project update meetings and provide clear field status updates.

  • Support incident investigations by documenting field conditions, taking photographs, preparing written summaries, and making required notifications to project leadership.

  • Coordinate with senior supervisors or project managers before releasing contractors due to inclement weather, outage cancellation, work stoppage, or other field changes.

  • Promote a strong safety culture and ensure work is executed in a professional, disciplined, and utility-compliant manner.

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.

  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in overhead utility construction, line construction, transmission, distribution, maintenance, operations, or related electric utility field work.

  • Overhead line construction experience required.

  • Experience supervising, coordinating, or overseeing contractors, crews, or field construction activities.

  • Knowledge of overhead transmission and distribution construction methods, materials, tools, equipment, and safety requirements.

  • Experience with 69kV and below overhead line construction preferred.

  • Ability to read and interpret one-lines, circuit maps, construction drawings, work packages, and field documentation.

  • Ability to coordinate with operations teams regarding circuit availability, outages, clearances, and field work requirements.

  • Experience reviewing completed work units, material deliveries, field quantities, and contractor invoices.

  • Knowledge of utility material handling, receiving, verification, tagging, storage, and return processes.

  • Strong understanding of contractor oversight, field documentation, safety observation, quality control, and schedule coordination.

  • Knowledge of computer-based business applications and ability to complete required construction reporting and documentation.

  • Strong communication, documentation, coordination, and issue-resolution skills.

  • Ability to work independently in the field and represent CARIAN professionally with clients, contractors, operations teams, and project stakeholders.

  • Ability to travel to project sites throughout New Jersey.

  • Availability to support outage-driven schedules, off-hours work, overtime, emergency response, or weekend work as project needs require.

Preferred Experience

  • 15+ years of overhead utility construction, maintenance, operations, or line construction experience.

  • Experience with electric utility clients and utility contractor oversight.

  • Experience with 13kV work rules, rubber glove and sleeves procedures, and overhead line safety practices.

  • Experience supporting outage requests, outage coordination, field switching coordination, or related utility work processes.

  • Experience with 69kV and below construction and work methods.

  • Experience working with Division Operations, general foremen, construction crews, project managers, and utility stakeholders.

  • Experience performing incident documentation, field investigations, and safety-related reporting.

  • Prior experience as an overhead construction supervisor, line supervisor, general foreman, line foreman, construction inspector, field supervisor, or owner’s representative.

  • OSHA 30 preferred.

Compensation

The hourly rate range for this role is $55 – $82 per hour. This range represents a good-faith estimate at the time of posting; actual compensation will depend on experience, qualifications, assignment requirements, schedule, and other factors permitted by law. In addition to base compensation, the role includes eligibility for applicable overtime, a comprehensive benefits package, and a company 401(k) match.
