Payroll Team Leader

As part of our newly restructured People & Culture team, this is a unique opportunity for an experienced payroll leader to step into a key role driving excellence across a large, complex, multi-brand retail environment.

You’ll play a pivotal leadership role in ensuring the delivery of accurate, compliant, and timely payroll, while influencing process improvements, governance, and team capability. With strong organisational backing and a focus on continuous improvement, this role offers the chance to shape payroll operations at scale and partner closely with senior stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end‑to‑end payroll process, ensuring all payroll cycles are delivered accurately, on time and in compliance with legislative and industrial requirements
  • Provide hands-on people leadership to a team of Payroll Officers, growing capability, consistency and a culture of continuous improvement
  • Act as the primary technical escalation point for complex payroll queries, calculations, corrections and interpretations
  • Ensure strong payroll controls, reconciliations, audits and sign‑off processes are in place and adhered to
  • Maintain a deep understanding of awards, enterprise agreements, payroll legislation and system configuration
  • Identify and lead process improvement opportunities to reduce manual effort, errors and duplication
  • Partner with HR, Retail Operations, Finance and Systems teams to resolve issues and improve payroll outcomes
  • Manage payroll risks, incidents and remediation actions with clear communication and accountability
  • Ensure payroll documentation, procedures and training materials are current, clear and fit for purpose
  • Demonstrated experience leading payroll operations in a large, complex organisation
  • Strong technical payroll expertise, including legislation, awards and enterprise agreements
  • Proven experience improving payroll processes, controls and systems
  • High level of accuracy, attention to detail and risk awareness
  • Experience leading and developing a team in a high‑volume, deadline‑driven environment
