Physician General Surgeon

Functions as the General Surgeon/Physician aligned with the Surgery/Specialty Care Service in inpatient and outpatient settings at the Sioux Falls VA Medical Center in Sioux Falls, SD. This is an open continuous announcement until July 30, 2026. Qualified applicants will be considered and referred every 2 days until filled.

The incumbent should be able to diagnose and treat all of the common general surgical conditions, including malignancies of the gastrointestinal tract (stomach, small and large intestine), gallbladder, endocrine system, skin and soft tissue. Experience and interest in vascular access (AV fistula creation especially), upper and lower endoscopy, and advanced laparoscopy is preferred. The candidate will be expected to participate in call schedule after hours and at least one weekend a month, and will need to possess the ability to respond promptly in emergent situations. The incumbent should be proficient in placement of central venous and arterial catheters and should feel comfortable supervising others in their placement. The incumbent is responsible for seeing patients in consultation in both inpatient and outpatient settings. The incumbent provides care of the Veterans' medical needs by performing examination, surgical consultation, and developing treatment and follow-up plans. The incumbent physician will provide ongoing patient and family education throughout the course of treatment. The incumbent must adhere to policies and procedures regarding the completion of all required orders, operation/procedure notes/reports, discharge summaries, progress notes, clinical reminders, all other required medical documentation, and performance measures in a timely fashion; will ensure the most effective delivery of care, while meeting and exceeding compliance, Joint Commission and VA Central Office performance measure standards; will mentor, train and provide supervision for residents and mid-levels in all aspects of their duties as required; and performs other directly related duties as requisiosioux VA offers a comprehensive total rewards package.
