Physician - Hematopathology
JOB SUMMARY
The Physician - Hematopathology reports directly to the Division Chief of Hematopathology, and through the Division Chief to the Chair of Pathology. The Physician - Hematopathology represents his or her Division within the Department of Pathology, within Sidra and externally to provide, advance, and promote excellence in the investigation and diagnosis of pediatric and/or maternal hematologic diseases; and to plan and direct the educational activities, research and diagnostic test development in the Division. The primary responsibilities of the Physician - Hematopathology are the provision of laboratory service; diagnostic testing, test interpretation, communication with medical staff, quality control and assurance; participation in the management of the Division; teaching at various levels; basic and applied research; sharing responsibility for all aspects of laboratory functions including diagnostic testing, maintaining quality assurance programs, and training of laboratory staff, residents and fellows within the Division.
KEY ROLE ACCOUNTABILITIES
Supports and directs clinical service, research and educational activities of the Division.
Develops and validates test and orderable menu for hematopathology and transfusion, working with colleagues in hematopathology, immunopathology, medical microbiology, medical biochemistry, and other clinical and laboratory specialties.
Provides direction and assists in the validation and testing of the laboratory information system as it relates to hematopathology.
Leads and assists in quality assurance of the Division and the Department.
Assists in the hiring of colleagues and technologists.
General
Assists and supports the Division Chief and Department Chair in the development and implementation of the vision, strategic direction, and growth of the Division of Hematopathology and Department of Pathology.
Clinical and Technical
Medical oversight of clinical hematopathology diagnostics and, if consistent with training and experience, transfusion medicine.
Medical oversight of quality assurance and management of the clinical hematopathology laboratory in association with the laboratory manager, supervisors and bench technologists.
Consultation and advice regarding the appropriate investigation of pediatric and maternal patients suspected of diseases of the hematolic system, including both inherited and acquired conditions.
Interpretation of results from laboratory tests for diagnosis and management of hematologic conditions in pediatric and maternal patients.
Consultation and advice regarding the appropriate utilization of hematopathological and transfusion-related tests by Sidra clinicians and monitoring of areas of over- and under-utilization.
Assists clinicians in development of test algorithms for diagnosis of complex hematological disorders.
Educational
Education of medical students and postgraduate trainees in the Department of Pathology and graduate/postgraduate programs at Sidra.
Informal and formal education in the clinical laboratory setting, seminars, and rounds.
Updates physicians of new developments and trends in diagnostic hematopathology.
Initiation and implementation of continuing education programs for laboratory technologists within the Division of Hematopathology (e.g. rounds, invited seminars, symposia, teleconferences).
Trains research students and fellows in both the basic and R&D laboratories.
Research and Diagnostic Test Development
Basic and applied clinically relevant research in the area of hematopathology in collaboration with internal and external scientists and clinicians.
Seeks external funding to support basic and applied research activities.
Continuing efforts to improve existing diagnostic methods, replace outdated technology, evaluate new technology, and implement new research findings in diagnostic hematopathology.
In collaboration with Sidra clinicians, performs clinical research projects that address specific and important questions in the diagnosis and management of pediatric and maternal patients.
Administrative
Participation in committees relevant to the Department of Pathology and the Division of Hematopathology within Sidra as directed by the Department Chair and/or Division Chief.
Assists in establishment of standards for delivery of diagnostic and consultative services in hematopathology and transfusion.
Assists in the management of the Division technologists.
Assists in coordination of fellow/resident/medical student education within the Division.
Determination of the range and scope of hematopathological and transfusion-related testing in consultation with Sidra clinicians.
Assists in establishment and monitoring of quality improvement and utilization review.
Continuous review of the hematopathology testing menu offered by the core laboratory in order to identify obsolete tests and areas where introduction of new or improved testing is warranted.
Continuous review of instrumentation in the core laboratory with a view to update and upgrade the testing technology utilized in the Division to achieve improved workflow as well as cost effectiveness.

QUALIFICATIONS & EXPERIENCE
Education
MD, MBBS (or equivalent)
Residency and/or Fellowship training in Hematopathology which includes training in pediatric hematopathology and relevant Board Certification
Experience
2+ years of post-certification/residency experience focusing on the laboratory diagnosis and monitoring of hematologic disorders.
