Postdoctoral Scientist Immunosafety/Toxicology
At Lilly, we unite caring with discovery to make life better for people around the world. We are a global healthcare leader headquartered in Indianapolis, Indiana. Our employees around the world work to discover and bring life-changing medicines to those who need them, improve the understanding and management of disease, and give back to our communities through philanthropy and volunteerism. We give our best effort to our work, and we put people first. We’re looking for people who are determined to make life better for people around the world.
Post-Doctoral Scientist – Fixed Duration Employment – Investigative Toxicology (Immune-Mediated Drug-Induced Liver Injury)
Are you looking to make a significant difference by helping to solve one of the most consequential unsolved problems in drug safety -predicting immune-mediated liver injury before it ever reaches patients?
We are seeking an ambitious post-doctoral scientist with strong research and communication skills to contribute to a high-visibility research program. Your work will contribute to the development of human-relevant New Approach Methodologies (NAMs) designed to detect and predict immune-mediated drug-induced liver injury (iDILI) -a leading cause of late-stage clinical failures and drug withdrawals that current preclinical tools are largely unable to anticipate. In this role, you will:
- Investigate how interactions between liver biology and the immune system contribute to drug-induced liver injury, working across hepatocyte biology, innate immune sensing, and adaptive immunity.
- Help build and apply human-relevant model systems that integrate liver and immune biology into a mechanistically informed, predictive safety platform.
- Contribute to a platform capable of identifying immune-mediated liver liabilities earlier in drug development, with the potential to change how the industry approaches this challenge.
- Work within a collaborative, academic-style postdoctoral group that leads NAMs innovation at Lilly, with close connections across drug metabolism, computational toxicology, translational medicine, and immunogenicity functions.
- Identify areas of key need across drug development and champion creative solutions to address those needs. Maintain external awareness and learning to benefit the organization.
- Present findings at conferences and publish in high quality peer-reviewed journals.
Basic Qualifications
- PhD in immunology, toxicology, cell biology, pharmacology, biochemistry, or a closely related life science field (degree conferred or expected before the start date).
- Strong foundation in immunology, cell biology, or mechanistic toxicology.
- Demonstrated ability to design experiments, learn new approaches, and solve problems independently.
- Track record of peer-reviewed publications in toxicology, immunology, or liver biology, with preference for work directly relevant to DILI or immune-mediated organ toxicity.
Additional Information
- Position location: Indianapolis, Indiana.
- This position is not permanent. It is for a fixed duration of two years with potential to extend to three years and for a maximum of up to four years. You will have opportunities to apply for full-time positions after your duration is complete.
Additional Skills/Preferences
If you are described with these skills, you could be a great fit for the role:
- Self-directed and highly motivated individual who wants to learn new techniques while continually pursuing research and publication goals.
- Excellent communicator (oral and written) with presentation experience, along with a strong publication record.
- Proficient in data analysis and reporting.
- Experience with primary mammalian cell culture and in vitro model systems.
- Interest or background in liver biology, immune cell biology, antigen presentation, or drug metabolism.
- Familiarity with complex cell models, co-culture systems, or organ-on-chip approaches is a plus.
- Strong interpersonal skills and a track record of success in collaborative, multidisciplinary team environments.
About Eli Lilly’s Postdoctoral Scientist Program
When it comes to research and development, our goal is to discover and deliver innovative medicines that make life better for people around the world. It’s challenging, expensive and often filled with failure. But even when we fail, we advance medical science and understanding by learning more about diseases, biology and chemistry — ultimately bringing new solutions one step closer to reality.
Over the course of our history, we have shed light on some of the toughest health care problems known to man - diabetes, heart disease, infectious diseases, neuroscience disorders, cancer and more. We could not pursue this without our research and development team.
Postdoctoral scientists help us continue this pursuit. During your experience you will get:
- Top industry research experience
- Mentoring by some of Lilly’s top scientists
- Laboratory and classroom training and education to further your development
- Collaboration and networking across dozens of postdoctoral scientists and other researchers
