Principal Engineer - Mechanical (Data Centre Specialist)
Responsibilities
- Prepare feasibility studies, technical reports, and design narratives to meet project brief requirements in agreed formats and review with the Local GCC Head / Regional Lead.
- Agree and monitor scope of works with the GCC BIM Lead and Regional Mechanical Lead.
- Clearly define project deliverables, timelines, and engineering outputs with stakeholders.
- Carry out detailed mechanical design for Data Centre projects in line with applicable international standards (ASHRAE, TIA-942, Uptime Institute) and local codes.
- Ensure compliance with Construction Design Management (CDM), QA procedures, and internal technical review processes.
- Review and monitor design calculations, including thermal load analysis, cooling calculations, airflow studies, and redundancy strategies, ensuring technical accuracy and sign-off.
- Ensure all project information is completed in a timely manner and maintain clear communication with global teams regarding progress.
- Provide technical documentation (reports, specifications, BOQs, and schedules) to support tender and construction stages.
- Coordinate production of design deliverables (drawings, BIM models, specifications) and review outputs from team members.
- Manage day-to-day queries from global teams, ensuring timely technical support and resolution.
- Work closely with multidisciplinary teams (Architecture, Electrical, Structural) to ensure fully coordinated design solutions.
- Identify and report any deviations between design intent and construction outputs, proposing mitigation solutions.
- Manage design workflows using WSP/global project management tools and systems.
- Lead the design process and encourage the team to deliver cost-effective, energy-efficient, and innovative solutions.
- Follow document control, QA/QC, and information management processes, ensuring all deliverables are properly reviewed and issued.
- Ensure proper archiving and filing of design documentation for future reference and audit purposes.
Technical and Project Management
- Act as the Subject Matter Expert (SME) for Data Centre mechanical systems within GCC.
- Implement project delivery frameworks, QA/QC procedures, and performance monitoring systems.
- Promote technical excellence across all projects and mentor the team in best practices.
- Undertake technical reviews and contribute to concept and detailed design stages.
- Provide continuous feedback to the GCC leadership team on process improvements and delivery efficiency.
- Develop and maintain strong working relationships with regional/global teams.
- Participate in internal and external meetings, coordinating effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Identify project and delivery risks and collaborate with commercial and project management teams for mitigation.
- Manage delegated tasks and ensure deadlines are met, escalating any resource or delivery concerns.
- Monitor and support financial aspects such as project effort tracking, budget adherence, and change management.
- Ensure delivery milestones are achieved in line with project schedules.
- Support dispute resolution and technical clarifications when required.
Data Centre Specific Responsibilities
- Design and optimize cooling systems including CRAC/CRAH units, chilled water systems, DX systems, and liquid cooling solutions.
- Implement hot aisle/cold aisle containment, airflow management, and thermal optimization strategies.
- Develop redundancy strategies (N, N+1, 2N, 2N+1) aligned with Tier requirements.
- Support Tier certification processes (Tier II/III/IV) including documentation and design validation.
- Conduct energy efficiency studies including PUE optimization and sustainability initiatives.
- Integrate emerging technologies such as high-density cooling and modular data centre solutions.
BIM & Digital Delivery
- Lead BIM-based mechanical design and coordination ensuring compliance with BEP and LOD requirements.
- Coordinate with discipline leads to ensure clash-free and federated model delivery.
- Conduct model reviews, audits, and quality checks using tools like Revit and Navisworks.
- Ensure adherence to WSP BIM standards, naming conventions, and workflows.
- Support development of BIM templates, libraries, and automation initiatives.
Key Competencies / Skills
Mandatory Skills
- Proven experience in Mechanical Building Services design with strong exposure to Data Centre projects.
- Expertise in ASHRAE (especially TC 9.9), TIA-942, and Uptime Institute standards.
- Strong understanding of cooling technologies, thermal management, and energy efficiency.
- Experience in feasibility studies, concept design, and detailed engineering delivery.
- Strong knowledge of international codes (IBC, NFPA, ASHRAE, etc.).
- Excellent communication and presentation skills.
- Proficiency in engineering software such as IES, HAP, Hevacomp, and BIM tools (Revit, Navisworks).
Desirable Skills
- Experience working in a GCC / offshore delivery model.
- Familiarity with sustainability frameworks and green building standards.
- Knowledge of automation, scripting, or digital engineering tools.
- Bachelor’s Degree / Master’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering
- Minimum 12–18+ years of relevant experience
- Minimum 5–8 years in Data Centre / Mission Critical projects
Other Requirements
- Strong working knowledge of MS Office (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project).
- Excellent written and verbal English communication skills.
- Ability to work independently and within multidisciplinary teams.
- Willingness to align with global project timelines and standards.
