Principal Product Architect - Managed Services

Our Why

Datacom works with organisations and communities across Australia and New Zealand to make a difference in people’s lives and help organisations use the power of tech to innovate and grow.

About the Role

Are you a senior architect who thrives on solving complex problems across multiple technology domains? We are looking for a Principal Product Architect - Managed Services to play a critical role in shaping the technical, security, and cost architectures that power our managed service solutions.

This is a senior individual contributor role that sits at the intersection of product, delivery, and technology. You will work alongside product managers, product leaders, and service delivery teams to design new service architectures, optimise existing ones, and explore opportunities that drive better outcomes for our customers and our business.

You will bring a broad architectural mindset, knowing when to go deep and when to draw on the specialist expertise of those around you. You will prototype, test, and validate ideas — turning technical possibilities into confident, practical decisions that delivery teams can act on.

If you are curious, collaborative, and energised by the challenge of making complex technology services better, this role is for you.

What You Will Do

  • Develop and maintain technical, security, and cost architectures for managed service solutions used across service delivery.
  • Design architecture patterns and solution options for new managed services and service enhancements, ensuring alignment to strategic product direction and operational needs.
  • Assess and optimise existing service architectures to improve delivery efficiency, service quality, resilience, security, and commercial outcomes.
  • Partner with product managers and product leaders to identify, assess, and prioritise technical solution options that support customer value, business objectives, and investment decisions.
  • Work closely with service delivery leaders and teams to ensure solution architectures are practical, supportable, and grounded in operational realities.
  • Prototype, test, and validate platform changes, emerging technologies, and service optimisations to inform service evolution and enable confident adoption by delivery teams.
  • Establish and maintain a repository of managed service architectures, patterns, and associated cost considerations to improve visibility, consistency, and reuse across the portfolio.
  • Provide architectural guidance on the use of AI-enabled capabilities and practical AI architecture approaches where these can improve managed service outcomes.
  • Support the development and validation of new service propositions, including selected client engagement to test concepts, technologies, and service design assumptions.
  • Contribute to governance, standards, and documentation that strengthen the consistency and quality of architecture decisions across managed services.
  • Leverage specialist subject matter expertise from across the business to inform architecture decisions in areas requiring deeper technical or domain knowledge.

What You Will Bring

Experience and Qualifications

  • A Bachelor's degree in information technology, computer science, engineering, or a related discipline — or equivalent practical experience.
  • Significant experience in architecture, solution design, or service design within a managed services or complex technology services environment.
  • Demonstrated ability to work across multiple technology domains as a broad architectural generalist, while effectively engaging specialist expertise where required.
  • Experience developing or influencing secure, supportable, and commercially viable solution architectures.
  • A strong understanding of architecture considerations spanning technical design, operational supportability, security, risk, and cost.
  • Experience partnering with product, delivery, and operational stakeholders to translate business and customer needs into practical architectural outcomes.
  • Practical experience with AI architecture, including the evaluation or application of AI-enabled capabilities in enterprise or managed services contexts.
  • Experience prototyping, testing, or validating new technologies, platform capabilities, or service improvements to support decision-making.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to present complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Experience engaging with clients or customer stakeholders in the context of solution validation, service design, or innovation initiatives will be highly regarded.

Capabilities and Mindset

  • Strategic and systems thinking — the ability to see the big picture while managing the details that matter.
  • Strong architectural judgement across technical, security, operational, and commercial dimensions.
  • The ability to simplify complexity and communicate clearly across varied stakeholder groups.
  • A collaborative approach, with the ability to influence and lead through expertise rather than authority.
  • Analytical and evidence-based problem solving.
  • A genuine curiosity, an appetite for experimentation, and a continuous improvement mindset.
  • Strong documentation discipline and a commitment to clarity and quality.
