Product Designer (Contract)

About Skip

Skip is a mission-driven Australian home loan lender built to fast-track Aussies into home ownership. Buying a home shouldn’t mean putting life on pause to save a massive deposit while property prices sprint ahead. We’re here to build a fairer, faster path to home ownership, so more people can stop paying their landlord’s mortgage and start paying their own.

We’re backed by leading US venture funds, global credit partners, and prominent Australian investors including Daniel Petre AO and Ed Robinson. We originate low-deposit home loans and are scaling our loan book aggressively, with our loan book being multiples larger than last year. We have major distribution partnerships live, strong credit performance, and expanding product lines - we’re entering a true hyper-growth phase.

We’re a team that moves quickly, obsesses over the customer experience, and backs each other to do the best work of our careers. If you like solving meaningful problems, shipping real change, and taking ownership, you’ll feel at home here.

Mission:

Make the new Skip borrower app feel unmistakably like Skip.

We're rebuilding our borrower app. We need a designer to take the experience our brand promises and express it natively within our borrower product: the same warmth, clarity, trust and ease, encoded so it's consistent end to end. This is the face of the company for the person who has just made the biggest financial decision of their life, often on their phone. Getting it right matters

Please note this is a contract role and is expected to be 2-4 weeks work, however we’ve got other projects in the pipeline too. If you crush this we can discuss longer term arrangements.

About the role:

We're hiring a designer who ships. You'll take our existing borrower app feature set, fold in a small number of new UX additions, and translate Skip's brand into a real, build-ready product experience.

There's no handoff culture here and no spec waiting for you. You'll work directly with engineering, scope the new UX additions with us, and design in our tokens and React reality so the team can ship without guesswork. You own the craft from brand expression through to pixel-precise, interaction-complete handoff.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Translate brand into product.

    • Take Skip's brand expression - voice, colour, type, motion, the feeling of trust and ease - and encode it consistently across every screen of the new app.

  • Map the existing feature set.

    • Carry what already works into the new app screen by screen, preserving function while lifting the experience.

  • Design the new UX additions.

    • Scope a small set of targeted UX improvements with us and design them so they feel native to the flow, not bolted on.

  • Ship build-ready design.

    • Pixel-precise, interaction-complete work in our design tokens, mobile-first, that engineers can build directly. Not prototypes that need reworking.

  • Leave reusable patterns behind.

    • Components and conventions the team can keep building against after the contract ends.

What you will bring:

  • DTC craft, mobile-first.

    • You design for someone making the biggest financial decision of their life, often on their phone. Clarity builds trust; control reduces anxiety. You sweat the 3px padding issue as much as the information architecture, and the work is portfolio-grade, not just bar-clearing.

  • Brand-into-product fluency.

    • You've taken a brand and made a real product feel like it - a coherent experience end to end, not surface theming.

  • Systems instinct.

    • You design in components and tokens, not one-off screens, and you hand off clean.

  • AI-native workflow.

    • You use Figma AI, Claude Code or similar regularly and with intent (not as a slop machine) - and treat it as a force multiplier.

  • End-to-end ownership.

    • You take a scoped brief, run it, and ship in cycles without hand-holding. You're the only designer on this.

  • Comfort with ambiguity.

    • We're a small team at a growth-stage fintech. You're energised by a sharp brief and the freedom to run it, not paralysed by the gaps.

How We’ll Work Together

  • We’ll ensure you have a tight brief and all the background requirements to do your best work.

  • You’ll report directly to our Head of Engineering who is responsible for delivery of this project.

  • We’re open to how you want to structure your contract (Fixed, time based etc)

  • We expect this initial contract to be 2-4 weeks work, however we’ve got other projects in the pipeline too. If you crush this we can discuss longer term arrangements.
